About This Cause
As a Center for Independent Living, Heightened Independence and Progress provides information and referral, advocacy, peer support and independent living skills training. These core services are augmented by other programs including the following: Programs that provide care management for adults with disabilities and their caregivers to enable individuals to remain in their homes rather than move into a more restrictive environment. Linkages may be provided to Meals on Wheels, prescription assistance programs, hospital-based programs, home health aide services and other community-based programs. Rehab Technology Programs provide funding for the purchase of disability-related equipment as well as ramps and other home modifications that remove architectural barriers and increase accessibility and safety. A NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities Support Coordination Program assists Medicaid-eligible individuals to enhance their independent living by accessing community-based supports and services. A number of Adjustment to Vision Loss Peer Support Groups provide resources, encouragement and support to individuals who are dealing with the loss of their vision. This includes a telephone peer support group that takes place on a monthly basis for individuals from all parts of New Jersey who are dealing with vision loss. Multimedia Transcription Service transcribes textbooks into Braille for students across the country. One-on-one demonstrations of assistive technology items are provided as well as technical assistance to facilitate the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the community. Educational and social activities address the leisure-time needs of hip's consumers and help to alleviate the feelings of isolation people with disabilities often experience. Participation is faciliatated by the provision of door-to-door wheelchair accessible transportation.
