EMERSON INSTITUTE

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20009 United States

Mission Statement

Emerson, founded in 1852, is a small, independent, and diverse college preparatory day school for students in grades 9-12.

About This Cause

Emerson Preparatory School began in 1852 as the Emerson Institute, a school to prepare local boys for attendance at Harvard. Emerson was named after George Barrell Emerson, a progressive thinker in women's education and cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson evolved to become a more inclusive college preparatory school, as Washington’s first co-ed preparatory school in 1920. Today Emerson welcomes a diverse student body from all parts of DC, suburban Maryland and Virginia, and the international community and prepares them in a healthier way for colleges and universities throughout the United States and the world. Over the course of more than 165 years, Emerson has called a number of locations home. In 1937, Emerson moved to 1324 18th Street Northwest near Dupont Circle between Massachusetts and Connecticut Avenues, a location which it occupied for 80 years, until the fall of 2017, when Emerson joined the distinguished organizations within the Thurgood Marshall Center, on 12th Street NW, a focal point for the vibrant Logan Circle community.
