About This Cause

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School exists to transform lives. We are a Catholic, co-educational, college-preparatory school, empowering students to succeed in college, work, and life. We bring together 350 students from low-income families in Baltimore City to provide a rigorous education, corporate work experience, and the opportunity to pursue a path to a bright future. Partnering with 125 organizations, the school's hallmark Corporate Internship Program matches each student with a corporate work placement: students earn a portion of their tuition while learning 21st Century workplace skills and developing valuable professional connections. CRJ is part of a network of 32 Cristo Rey schools across the country. The first school was opened 21 years ago by Jesuits to provide a college preparatory education in an under-served Chicago neighborhood. Families there wanted a better life for their children, and the Jesuits rightly believed that education was the way out of poverty. In 2007 our school was founded in Baltimore in the Jesuit tradition: nurturing our students to be men and women for and with others through academic achievement and civic leadership. Our students’ diversity—in race, faith, and culture—continues to be one of our greatest sources of strength. We partner with the Maryland Province Jesuits, the Cristo Rey Network, the Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools, and the business and philanthropic communities to make our mission come to life. CRJ is serving a critical need in Baltimore City by providing access to a high quality, high school education to students who might not otherwise have the chance to go to a school that prepares them for college and careers. The cost per student at CRJ is $16,500—about the same amount as City schools. However, we do not receive public funding and the families we serve cannot afford to pay that much in tuition. On average, CRJ families pay $1,000 per year. Students earn a portion of their tuition—up to $8,000—by working five days in a professional setting every month: we look to the philanthropic community to invest in our program to fill the gap and make equitable opportunity available to our students. We raise over $3 million in philanthropic contributions each year.
