Mission Statement

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) works globally to ensure that people who are deaf and hard of hearing can hear and talk. We want all families to be informed and supported, professionals to be appropriately qualified to teach and help children with hearing loss, public policy leaders to effectively address the needs of people with hearing loss, and communities to be empowered to help their neighbors with hearing loss succeed.

About This Cause

With over 130 years of service, AG Bell is a lifelong resource, support network and advocate for listening, learning, talking and living independently with hearing loss. There are more than 34 million children across the globe who have debilitating hearing loss - many were born with hearing loss while others lost their hearing to illness or accident. For most of them, there is no history of hearing loss in their family and parents are often unaware that their child can learn to hear and talk. With hearing devices (hearing aids for children who are hard of hearing and cochlear implants for children who are deaf) and speech therapy, children learn to speak the language of their home and can catch up to their peers with typical hearing and join in the same school, sports, community and home life alongside of them. But early action is vital - and that means that parents need to know what to do and take steps early in their child's life to help them hear and talk. Through publications, outreach, training, scholarships and financial aid, AG Bell promotes the use of spoken language and hearing technology. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., with chapters located throughout the United States and around the world through a network of international affiliates, AG Bell's global presence provides its members and the public with the support they need — close to home. AG Bell supports children and their families throughout their journey by providing information and education about hearing loss and about what needs to be done for a child to learn to hear and talk. The organization gives parents many tools, from the Parent Support Line where parents can speak directly with a parent whose child grew up with hearing loss who answers specific questions - to financial aid to help with the unexpected costs of adjusting to their child's health and education needs - to youth programming that helps teens deal with bullying, isolation, and self-identity and learn leadership and resilience to grow into thriving independent adults. AG Bell offers a college scholarship program and engages young adults who are deaf and hard of hearing as speakers, volunteers, interns and advocates to help children growing up with hearing loss. Gifts to AG Bell, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, are tax deductible as allowed by law.
