Mission Gallaudet University, federally chartered in 1864, is a bilingual, diverse, multicultural institution of higher education that ensures the intellectual and professional advancement of deaf and hard of hearing individuals through American Sign Language (ASL) and English. About This Cause

Gallaudet University has been the educational, political, social, and economic engine of the deaf and signing community on a national and global scale for 160 years. Founded in 1864, Gallaudet University is a federally chartered private university for deaf and hard of hearing students. Located in Washington D.C., Gallaudet is the only institution of higher learning in the world where students live and learn in American Sign Language and English. The University’s mission is to ensure the intellectual and professional advancement of people who are deaf and hard of hearing and it maintains a proud tradition of research and scholarly activity.
