Mission Statement

AMIDEAST is dedicated to creating hope, opportunity, and mutual understanding among people in the Middle East, North Africa, and the United States through life-changing opportunities for education and cultural exchanges. Our vision is a world where all people have access to opportunities that enable them go as far as their dreams, talents, and dedication can take them.

About This Cause

Headquartered in Washington, DC, AMIDEAST is a private, U.S. nonprofit organization with nearly seven decades of engagement in international education, training, and development assistance in the Middle East and North Africa. With dedicated staff and offices in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, the UAE, the West Bank and Gaza, and Yemen, AMIDEAST offers programs and services that expand educational and economic opportunity for hundreds of thousands of men and women each year. Our services focus on U.S. study, scholarship and exchange programs, employability and entrepreneurship training, testing, and institutional capacity building. The need for education and training doesn’t stop because of political and economic turmoil and a pandemic. This year, more than ever, AMIDEAST has been working hard to provide training and educational opportunities that empower youth and women to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities across the region, including in especially challenging places such as Aden, Lebanon, and the West Bank and Gaza. Our Hope Fund and the Diana Kamal Scholarship Search Fund programs help students from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, and the West Bank and Gaza compete to win full or nearly full scholarships for undergraduate study at leading U.S. colleges and universities. By covering the up-front costs of testing and application fees, we are able to remove the financial barriers so that academically outstanding students who lack financial resources can compete for these life-changing opportunities. We also help their families cover costs that aren’t provided, such as flights, books, and health insurance. Another important focus is employability and entrepreneurship training. Our Skills for Success® programs are helping young men and women gain skills that help them overcome barriers to the region’s competitive job market. By targeting recent graduates, these programs help hardworking youth leverage the knowledge they acquired through their years of schooling to benefit their communities. We also work with aspiring entrepreneurs — young men and women alike — through initiatives such as the Arab Women’s Entrepreneurship Project, the Youth Entrepreneurship Project, and the AMIDEAST Entrepreneur Institute, which was the first organization in Lebanon to provide training for entrepreneurs when it was launched 10 years ago. Because of the pandemic, our offices moved quickly online in order to continue to provide critically needed training and educational services to our communities. Making this transition has required us to underwrite the considerable expense required to make this transition, which has even included exploring ways to offer meaningful exchange experiences when travel for study abroad hasn’t been possible. We are additionally seeking to enable youth with disabilities to benefit from our exchange programs. Your support will enable us to continue to innovate and mount programs that help open pathways to a brighter future for the thousands of youth and women we seek to empower each year through education and training.
