About This Cause
Family Service of Roanoke Valley is a private, not-for-profit organization that has served Roanoke Valley residents since 1901. We are a dynamic, multi-service agency that helps a diverse population of clients that spans the area's economic, ethnic, and cultural divisions. We serve the Cities of Roanoke and Salem, Counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Franklin and Roanoke, and Town of Vinton. We include two program divisions: Mental Health Services and Community Services. Our Mental Health Services Division includes Counseling for all ages beginning at 18 months. We offer in-office and telehealth services. Our Community Services Division includes Youth Development (which occurs in both in-school and after-school programs), as well as Guardianship and Conservatorship services for older adults. We also have a healthy relationship group for adults who have a history of using violence with their partners. Our newest program is our Family Support Services program which provides peer-to-peer support, education and encouragement to those working through mental health, substance abuse and/or trauma recovery. The organizational structure of the agency consists of an 18-member Board of Directors who are business and community leaders; a President & CEO; a CFO (Chief Financial Officer); a CDO (Chief Development Officer), and a CPO (Chief Program Officer). Currently, the agency has 44 staff members, and volunteers are also utilized. An advanced degree is required of the President & CEO and most counselors hold either a Master's or Doctoral degree along with professional certifications. With a balanced budget and a well-monitored strategic plan, the agency executes its mission diligently every day and responds to community needs as they arise. Operating on a $2.4 million budget, Family Service depends on the support of generous donors, corporate sponsors, local, state and federal grants, and public funding. Insurance reimbursements and program service fees paid by clients cover some but not all the costs associated with mental health care. Thirty-three percent of clients require a sliding scale fee. The agency is licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services as a Mental Health Provider. Family Service is also a member agency of Social Current (social-current.org).
