Mission Statement

Children are the future — and when they are in jeopardy, families, communities and countries are too. Yet every day, children fall short of becoming who they can be because extreme poverty robs them of the health, nutrition, education and opportunity they need. These children are also the most vulnerable to violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse, which destroys any fragile gains they may make. Helping Children Thrive, Leading Sustainable Change We know that lasting change comes from children — and that if we change a childhood, we change the world. ChildFund International is there for children every step of their lives, empowering them, their families and their communities so that every child has the chance to not just survive, but thrive, long into the future.

About This Cause

We believe every child deserves to grow up safe from harm. We help communities transform themselves into places where children have what they need to live at their potential throughout their lives. Our Impact: • 24 countries • More than 11 million children and family member participants • More than 80 years of experience • Founding member of ChildFund Alliance, a global network of 11 organizations serving children in over 50 countries The Right Support at the Right Time: Our Tailored Life Stage Approach No matter their age, children need loving caregivers, health care, nutrition, clean water and sanitation, education, opportunity and safety. But ensuring these essentials for an infant is not the same as for a 17-year-old. We recognize the distinct needs of children as they grow and change — and tailor our age-specific interventions accordingly. We also know that children’s well-being is inextricably linked to their safety from abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation. So every ChildFund program emphasizes keeping children safe. Ages 0-5 Goal: Infants Are Healthy and Secure ChildFund’s early childhood programming is based on the premise that what happens to children early in life directly affects their ability to be productive adults. ChildFund ensures that the youngest children start their lives in the conditions they need to live at their potential — from the beginning. Our programs offer: • Stronger bonds with the adults who care for them. • Good nutrition and care during the prenatal period and early years. • Protection against potentially life-threatening childhood illnesses. • Opportunities to develop and learn through play and exploration. Ages 6-14 Goal: Children Are Educated and Confident The majority of children we serve are in this formative stage of life, a time for huge leaps in learning and confidence — if they are given the opportunity. But too often, children in poverty cannot go to school, either because there is no nearby school or because they must work to support the family. ChildFund provides the essential foundation for lifelong learning and supports their safe transition through adolescence. Our programs offer: • Knowledge and life skills in school, at home and in the community. • Foundations to build lifelong learning and confidence for today and hope for the future. • Interaction with other children, family and community members to develop social skills. Ages 15-24 Goal: Youth Are Skilled and Involved Youth have the power to either reverse or reinforce the generational cycle of poverty. This is both the challenge and the opportunity of the critical transition into adulthood. At this pivotal moment, we empower youth with life and vocational skills so they can gain safe and sustainable employment, develop a healthy sexual and reproductive life, and become positive change agents for themselves, their families and their communities. Our programs offer: • Training on relevant skills to enter the workforce and meet challenges to grow into productive adults. • Skills to help understand and express emotions in ways that foster safe and fulfilling relationships. • Enhanced social and leadership skills to become meaningfully involved for the betterment of their communities. Sustaining Change: Our Commitment to Empowering Local Communities Children cannot thrive without lasting and well-established support. Protecting children and helping them prosper starts in families, extends to communities and engages all levels of government. ChildFund is deeply invested in strengthening these core support systems — for the benefit of today’s children as well as future generations. We believe this is how we will build a better world. STRENGTHENING PARTNERS: Mutual respect and a shared commitment to sustaining real change define our decades-long relationships with local partners. Few organizations are as deeply committed as ChildFund is to building a partner’s long-term capacity and stability. Their local expertise helps us analyze gaps on the ground so we can make the most impactful investments. In turn, they develop autonomy and a sense of ownership and agency that keeps them invested for the long term. EMPOWERING PARENTS: Parents are children’s first teachers and a critical line of defense and protection. We are breaking ground with our responsive parenting program, which fosters strong, positive caregiver-child relationships. One program in Ecuador, Mother Guides, is not only showing gains in children’s social, emotional and physical development , it is reaping a dramatic social return on investment: $2 to every dollar invested. We project this to grow to a $3.50 return. ACCOUNTABILITY ChildFund is efficient. We devote 82 percent of our total expenditures to programs for children. ChildFund is recognized for stewardship, with high ratings from Charity Navigator, the Charities Review Council, the American Institute of Philanthropy and the Better Business Bureau. Our success has garnered the recognition of companies looking to drive lasting, sustainable change. We are a trusted, effective partner: • Clinton Global Citizen Award 2015 • Procter & Gamble (P&G) Social Sustainability Partner Award 2014 • Airlink Partner of the Year Award 2015 • Association for Financial Professionals (AFP) Pinnacle Grand Prize Award 2014 for excellence in treasury and finance, sponsored by Wells Fargo & Co.
