About This Cause
Lynchburg Community Action Group, Inc. (Lyn-CAG) is a private, non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Located in Central Virginia, Lyn-CAG serves residents living in the City of Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell. Lyn-CAG serves to effectively assist low- to moderate- income individuals and families in the prevention, reduction or elimination of poverty and adverse situations in their lives. We provide direct assistance to clients by offering over twenty (20) services and programs to help our clients move from economic and social dependency to a better quality of life. Operating since 1965, Lyn-CAG has successfully administered programs and projects funded by federal, state and local agencies. Some of our programs and services include The Head Start Program (operating 11 centers); Child Care Program, Project Discovery (first-generation college prep program); Neighbor to Neighbor (AEP and Dominion Gas partnerships to assist clients with their utility bills); Virginia Cares (an ex-offender program); Free Tax Preparation (VITA/EITC) Program; Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids (HOPWA) and The Center for Employment Training (job readiness skills, certified nursing assistant training, medical technician training, and basic computer skills). Lyn-CAG prides itself on being the only HUD Certified Housing Counseling agency in Central Virginia – Region 2000. The Housing Counseling Services and Community Development Department programs and services includes Weatherization, Emergency Home Repair, Substantial Home Repair, Down Payment Assistance Program, CHDO, HOME and CDBG initiatives; housing and rental counseling, Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling, USDA Rural (both 502 and 504), Virginia Solutions Homelessness Prevention Program, and First-time Homebuyers’ Club. This department also offers Financial Literacy workshops, Tenants’ Rights and Responsibility workshops, Fair Housing workshops and a Rental Education Program.
