Mission Statement
"By nurturing the artist, we enrich the community. The Art League develops the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community." Founded in 1954, The Art League, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational nonprofit organization that has enriched the community through extensive visual art programming for people of all ages, successful outreach for under-served youth, and synergistic partnerships with local organizations, businesses and the entire DC metro region.
About This Cause
Through established and innovative programming, The Art League delivers artistic opportunities and engagement to students, artists, the membership and the community with a passion for the visual arts. The Art League uses the visual arts to bring together people from a wide variety of talents, experiences, and communities. The Art League generates engagement and active participation with supporters, volunteers, donors and the community at large. We have a mission-based commitment to reaching youth and under-served audiences: the economically disadvantaged, and the physically-, intellectually-, and emotionally- challenged, through hands-on experiences in the visual arts. Through committed staff, volunteers, community partnerships, and governance, The Art League operates with a high level of financial strength in facilities that support outstanding service to our community. The top three recent accomplishments include: 1. The League was voted "best place to take art classes" in the DC Region, through Washington Post's Express Best of D.C. Life September 2016; 2. The League was recognized and visited by the NEA and was invited to present at the National Initiative for Arts & Health in Military Summit, Tampa Florida in February 2017; 3. The League’s IMPart program was featured in the NEA’s 50th anniversary’s “Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts” video: https://www.arts.gov/video/creative-forces-nea-military-healing-arts-network Established 1954, The Art League consistently develops the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community. The Art League’s artistic programming is generally classified into four areas: gallery, school, outreach, and store. The Art League Gallery is a membership gallery that is open to all practicing artists, amateur to experienced. Approximately 1,000 amateur to semi-professional artists are members. The Gallery holds approximately 18 member exhibitions each year, including both all-media, un-themed shows and focused exhibitions, which challenge artists to push their artistic skills and create works that speak to a specific theme. All members can submit works for the monthly exhibits, which are juried by well-vetted art professionals from inside and outside the region. The Gallery also presents approximately 10 Solo Artist Shows each year through which it gives an emerging artist the opportunity to install a solo exhibit and introduces that artist to the community; it also provides professional development training to the artists. The Gallery also offers lectures, juror talks, artist demonstrations, and tours to special exhibits outside the DMV. The Art League School offers classes at all levels in virtually all of the fine arts, including drawing, watercolor, painting, pastel, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, fiber arts, and more. Classes are offered to students of all ages (five through adult), and all classes are taught by professional, highly-qualified artists. Enrollment in The Art League School is open to all. The School also offers workshops, where students spend a concentrated week or weekend studying a specific medium, taught by its faculty and distinguished visiting artists. Each year, over 6,500 students enroll in the school, filling over 11,000 seats in classes. Because all courses are noncredit, the focus is on personal enrichment through art or as an artist, rather than a degree. As a service for its students and members, The Art League store sells art supplies at a discounted rate, carrying professional quality material for the fine artist and student supplies requested by faculty members. Staffed by trained artists, it provides additional expert education on archival issues and safe use and disposal of artistic materials. The Art League’s method for Community Outreach is to use visual arts as a catalyst for personal enrichment, social engagement, and expressive catharsis. The Art League reaches out to the underserved in the community through three key components: 1- IMPart— a collaboration between The Art League, Fort Belvoir’s Warriors in Transition Unit, and the USO that provides recent Injured Military Personnel with visual arts experiences developed for personal enrichment, redeveloping fine motor skills, relaxed social engagement, and expressive catharsis. The program consists of 2 engagements: 1) off-site art course at Ft. Belvoir USO Warrior and Family Center that engage participants that are in-treatment PTSD patients at Ft. Belvoir Hospital, in hands-on arts experiences in photography, painting, drawing, and mixed media once-a-week. 2) on-site at the League ceramics course for combat injured military personnel, their techs, and caregivers, from Ft. Belvoir’s Warriors in Transition Unit B. 2- The Art League’s Youth Initiatives provides free visual arts curriculum and instruction to our area's youth, connecting them with professional artists to empower and inspire disadvantaged in our community. Nonprofit partners include and have included: Space of Her Own, Inc., Tenants and Workers United, Alexandria Seaport Foundation, and the family members of our IMPart program. 3- Geri Gordon Scholarship— The Geri Gordon Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 to celebrate former Art League School Director Geri Gordon’s remarkable vision and dedication to engaging the broadest level of community participation in Art League classes. The scholarships are awarded each class term, to students of all ages and abilities who could not otherwise afford to enroll. Donations are also the sole source of maintenance for the fund. Awarding scholarships to those in need – including SOHO and IMPart participants, helps fulfill The League’s mission to enrich the community by making the visual arts more available.
