Mission Statement

Central Virginia Health Services (CVHS) is a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides primary care, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services for medically underserved adults and children. It operates eighteen health centers serving fifteen counties and four cities throughout central Virginia. Last year CVHS provided healthcare to almost 46,000 patients. Poverty, geographic isolation, too few primary care or no dental or behavioral health providers characterize the underserved areas where CVHS sites are located. Without CVHS, many of its patients would need to travel over an hour to receive affordable health care. In urban areas the need of uninsured residents far exceeds the capacity available from the closest free clinic. We value and respect the dignity of all patients and include them as partners in achieving and/or maintaining their optimal health. Our organization’s values are: patient centered, integrity, professionalism, continuous improvement, compassion.

About This Cause

The mission of CVHS is to provide safe, accessible, affordable, comprehensive, high quality, and culturally sensitive health services to the people we serve. CVHS accepts all types of health insurance, including Medicaid and Medicare. Uninsured patients are welcome, and a sliding fee discount is available to those with incomes under 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. The discount is based on income and family size. Our professional staff are licensed and certified clinicians: primary care and internal medicine physicians, pediatricians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, counselors, dental and pharmacy technicians, and social workers. Our centers provide health care services such as physicals, chronic disease management, immunizations, and screenings for various diseases. CVHS offers general dentistry, including preventative, restorative, and periodontal care. Behavioral health services are offered for individuals and groups (families and children over 5 years). Affordable medications are available. CVHS employs outreach and enrollment assistants who enroll Virginians who are eligible for the health insurance marketplace or Medicaid. In 2019, CVHS providers saw 45,792 unduplicated patients in 153,111 visits. For 2019 reported data, 23.5% of these patients were uninsured, and 28.9% were Medicaid-insured. The majority of patients are from low income households, or reside in communities that are underserved for medical, dental, or behavioral health care. CVHS provides jobs for 405 Virginia residents. Our rural locations serve the residents of Albemarle, Brunswick, Buckingham, Caroline, Charles City, Charlotte, Cumberland, Fluvanna, King and Queen, King William, Louisa, Northumberland, Prince Edward, Prince George, Richmond, and Westmoreland counties. City-located centers are in Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Hopewell, and Petersburg. Founded in November 1970 by community activists in the medically underserved counties of Buckingham, Cumberland, and Fluvanna, CVHS is the Commonwealth of Virginia’s first and largest community health center. The first center operated in three trailers, one in each county. Over five decades, CVHS has grown steadily to include 18 sites, serving 12 additional rural counties and four cities with high poverty or designated medically underserved populations, including non-English speaking people. Growth in the service area has been fueled by community need and supported by the expansion of the federal community health center program under the George W. Bush and Obama administrations. A dramatic increase in uninsured people occurred following the 2008 economic recession, and now, CVHS serves patients insured through the Affordable Care Act. In 2013, CVHS began using a secure electronic medical records system. Sites acquired in the last ten years are Caroline Children’s Dental Program (2013), and the Neighborhood Family Health Center, on Preston Avenue in downtown Charlottesville (2015), offering medical and behavioral health services, including evening hours. The newest site is a school-based health center at Petersburg High School, the Crimson Clinic, which opened in September 2020. A nurse practitioner and licensed clinical social worker offer primary care and behavioral health services there, using an integrated model of care, for the schoolchildren and residents of Petersburg.
