Mission Statement
Health Brigade provides quality health services, especially to those least served, in a compassionate and non-judgmental environment.
About This Cause
Health Brigade, formerly Fan Free Clinic, located in Richmond, provides quality health services, especially to those least served, in a compassionate and non-judgmental environment. As Virginia’s oldest free clinic, Health Brigade was born in a church basement during a time of social unrest. For the ensuing 50 years, we addressed the most challenging and often stigmatized health issues of the day. We championed women’s health care in the 70’s and served as first responders to the AIDS pandemic in the 80’s. Today our services are just as critical. There are still nearly 100,000 people uninsured in our service area. We use a holistic person-centered care model, offering coordinated services for a healthy mind, body and spirit because we believe that EVERYONE, especially those least served, deserve quality care. Last year Health Brigade staff and volunteers: • Provided quality health care to nearly 1,500 patients through our medical clinic • Helped 450 clients with counseling and wellness services • Conducted 1,900 HIV tests on site and in the community • Interacted with nearly 14,000 community members through our health outreach and advocacy efforts Your support is needed so that we can continue to provide and expand care to our neighbors most in need. Our History: In 1968, a small community clinic―formed in conjunction with the free university movement and patterned after similar efforts in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood―was established in Richmond’s historic Fan District. Incorporated two years later, Health Brigade, formerly Fan Free Clinic, became the first free clinic in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the 1970s, HB’s efforts were focused on women’s health and the prevention of transmissible diseases. In the 1980s—responding to the onset of a national epidemic—HB established the first community-based HIV/AIDS outreach program in the state (and retains to this day a leadership position among HIV/AIDS service organizations). Today, as more and more individuals and families find themselves without adequate health care coverage and affordable resources, Health Brigade is reshaping itself once again to meet contemporary challenges. It’s this responsiveness—fueled by ingenuity and an unwavering commitment to the community it serves—that characterizes HB and allows us to say “Welcome”…day after day, month after month, and year after year.
