Mission Statement

The mission of Williams Mission Center at Main Street Baptist Church is to provide a safe environment and sufficient space to house community events, offering opportunities in academic education, indoor recreation, health screenings, exposure to the arts, and other disciplines beneficial to the welfare of our community. We shall achieve this by sponsoring, supporting, and partnering with private, public, non-profit, and corporate entities that seek to improve the overall quality of life for the community

About This Cause

The Williams Mission Center, located in the Town of Smithfield, Virginia, is used by different organizations. Because the number of requests received to use the facility is so great and the activities so varied, space is at a premium. The mission center is used by diverse entities, including non-profits, to sponsor programs and conduct events. Our desire is to complete the unfinished second floor, creating space for three additional classrooms. Expanding the space will enable multiple organizations or activities to meet simultaneously. The Williams Mission Center, built in 2014, has seen an increase in the number of organizations requesting use of the facility; in addition, we have partnered with different organizations in the county to sponsor community events. We are very proud of our partnerships with Virginia's Public Health Department, Sentara, Riverside, Bon Secours, and local hospital systems to sponsor health fairs and screening, testing, and inoculation clinics designed to serve economically challenged and uninsured residents. We have and will continue to host cultural events, banquets, formal affairs, theatrical performances, theatre troupes, dance and vocal groups from local college and universities. Many family reunions are held in the facility. Each year we host events sponsored by our local police department, including "National Night Out." "Town Hall Meetings," community resources, other community policing events and community resource fairs. Local Developers have used our facility to share development plans and information with concerned community and neighborhood groups. We have created a safe and comfortable space for tutorial groups serving school-age children, child daycare, and before and after-school care. We have and will continue to offer classes for adults, such as Home Maintenance, Being Energy Efficient, Don’t Be Scammed, Personal Finance, CPR, First Aid, Discovering Your Roots, and Staying Healthy, for the purpose of helping adults to live more productive lives. The Mission Center has been used to host special interest/training groups, quilting gills, history and genealogical societies, and parenting training groups. We have hosted exercise groups, neighborhood association meetings, and yoga groups. The Virginia State Police Certification Training as well as leadership training service groups and fraternity and sorority groups have used our facility for meetings. Our center is also used as a local emergency shelter. We have partnered with The Schoolhouse Museum and Isle of Wight Museum to offer training and educational presentations for the community. We have partnered with our local library system to offer educational programming for school-age children and pre-school age children. Having adequate space available to host these activities and to partner with different organizations is crucial to the welfare of our community. Receiving a grant to help fund the completion of the Williams Mission Center will be a win for our community.
