Mission Statement
We invest in and create innovative institutions and models that strengthen asset control and support economic development for American Indian people and their communities.
About This Cause
With the financial support of individuals, foundations, corporations and tribal donors, First Nations Development Institute significantly improves economic conditions for Native Americans through technical assistance and training, advocacy and policy, and direct financial grants in five key areas: • Financial & Investor Education • Native American Business & Asset Development • Combating Predatory Lending • Strengthening Native Nonprofits • Native Foods & Health Through the end of 2015, we have successfully managed 1,067 grants totaling more than $24.3 million to Native American projects and organizations in 39 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. Territory American Samoa. Our mission is to strengthen American Indian economies to support healthy Native communities First Nations Development Institute is a 35-year-old organization that was created by and is managed by Native American professionals. Founded in 1980, the organization in headquartered in Longmont, Colorado, and serves tribal nations and Native communities throughout the country. The organization is the largest American Indian economic rights organization in the U.S. Over its history, it has educated and supported hundreds of Native communities by providing the training tools, program models and financial resources required for creating, strengthening and retaining community-based Native nonprofit and tribal organizations. Our organization is lean and efficient. Our total staff consists of 23 people working with limited resources to serve a fully nationwide audience. About 87 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to the mission and purpose of the organization. Our core belief is that only solutions provided by Native peoples, for Native people, and defined within their own development strategies and cultural values, will succeed. In harmony with this philosophy, we work with Native communities where we are welcomed and invited - ensuring that our assistance will help projects move forward and be implemented in accordance with Native community values and priorities. Publicly, we state our core principle this way: We believe that when armed with the appropriate resources, Native peoples hold the capacity and ingenuity to ensure the sustainable, economic, spiritual and cultural well-being of their communities. Our work is critically important. For too long our First Americans have suffered economically through no fault of their own. In turn, this economic situation has brought about numerous social and health issues. First Nations - working under the concept of economic development and the regaining, acquiring and growing of Native assets - offers a long-term and often permanent improvement to those struggling communities.
