Mission Statement
The Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County operates Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, a no-kill shelter in Lovingston, VA. Our programs include: pet rescue; cat and dog adoption at Almost Home and other outlets and special events; sheltering and care at AH and foster homes for an average of over 1000 animals per year; transport for adoption at co-operating shelter in MA, NJ, PA, and northern Virginia; spay-neuter-vaccinations programs for pets of low-income residents; Trap-Neuter-Release programs for unsocialized cats; Help-to-Heal program for ill or injured, but treatable animals and senior pets; and related services. Our goal is to make our Nelson County service area effectively "No Kill" by reducing over-population and taking animals from the County government Animal Control facility to prevent euthanasia. We are supported solely by donations and charitable grants, and receive no public funds. Our Directors and Officers serve without pay, and over 60 stalwart volunteers help care for our pets.
