Mission Statement
LAWS is a nonprofit organization that provides free and confidential assistance to adult. youth, and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in Loudoun County, Virginia. With the help of our supporters and community, we empower victims of domestic and sexual violence with support, advocacy, and education so that they may live free from the effects of abuse. About This Cause
LAWS was founded in 1984 by three women from Loudoun County with an $800 donation from their church. The organization was incorporated under the name Loudoun Citizens for Social Justice, Inc. and began doing business as Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, or LAWS. In 1985, the founders opened the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, the only place in Loudoun County where women and children fleeing domestic violence could find refuge. Since opening the shelter doors in 1985, LAWS has expanded to provide a full array of comprehensive services to adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence. In addition to providing emergency shelter, LAWS also provides assistance to victims at our LAWS Community Services Center. There, we provide counseling, legal services, support groups, parenting classes, advocacy, and community outreach. On average, we provide direct services to over 1,000 adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence each year. LAWS also operates a thrift store, The Resourceful Woman, and the Loudoun Child Advocacy Center. LAWS has a staff of approximately 30 employees and 75 volunteers. Our volunteer Board of Directors represents a diverse group of community leaders who provide governance and oversight. At LAWS we seek to empower victims of domestic and sexual violence so that they may live lives free from fear, anxiety, and danger. All of our services are confidential and free of charge. The mission of LAWS is to serve adults and children who are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault; to empower, inform and advocate for adults and children; to educate the community about domestic violence and sexual assault and to work towards the elimination of personal and societal violence.
