The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters.
About This Cause
ABOUT THE TRUST The American Battlefield Trust is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that seeks both to preserve our nation’s hallowed battlegrounds and educate the public about what happened there and why it matters today. We seek to permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. PRESERVE OUR NATIONAL HERITAGE The modern battlefield preservation movement began in 1987 with the founding of an organization that would ultimately become the Civil War Trust. Since then, we have remained unwavering in our commitment to protect and safeguard our nation’s endangered battlefields. Through the generosity of our dedicated members, we have preserved more than 56,000 acres of significant battlefield land in 24 states from Massachusetts to New Mexico. Despite this progress, the vast majority of America’s battlefields remain unprotected and threatened. The National Park Service estimates that only 20 percent of the most significant battlefields of the Civil War are permanently preserved. Equally alarming, more than half the battlefields of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 have already been lost. We are in a race against time to save what is left. EDUCATE THE NEXT GENERATION Battlefields are outdoor classrooms, teaching young and old alike about the sacrifices made to secure the precious freedoms we enjoy today. We believe that history education is the foundation of good citizenship and a key ingredient in developing the leaders of tomorrow. From our outstanding educator resources to our award-winning magazine, and from our cutting-edge digital productions to our lively social media channels, we are committed to bringing to life the history of America’s turbulent first century. INSPIRE A LEGACY From the shots “heard ’round the world” at Lexington and Concord to the stillness at Appomattox, the decisive battles of America’s first century were fought in 36 states. By protecting the landscapes where those bloody engagements occurred, we are creating living memorials — not just to the 800,000 Americans who perished in those conflicts, but to all of the men and women who have answered their country’s call, prepared to give the last full measure of devotion. Through the preservation of historic battlefields, we honor their memory and sacrifice, making a pledge to today’s military that their service will never be forgotten.
