Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
About This Cause
A wish experience can be a game-changer for a child with a critical illness. Wishes help transform lives. Wishes fall into four categories: I wish to go . . . I wish to be . . . . I wish to meet . . . I wish to have . . . Any child over 2 ½ and under the age of 18, who is diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition, may qualify for a wish regardless of race, gender, creed, or socio-economic background. Surveys of wish parents found that: - 74% saw the wish experience as a positive turning point in the child’s battle against their illness. - 99% reported that the wish experience gave their child increased feelings of happiness, - 97% of parents said the wish experience strengthened their families. Make-A-Wish® Greater Virginia was established in 1987, and since its first wish has granted over 4,375 wishes for eligible children in the Commonwealth. In this most recent fiscal year, we granted 170 wishes for Virginia children. The current average cost of a wish is $9,000. We are proud that over 78 cents of every donated dollar goes directly to granting a child’s wish. Funds that are raised in Virginia stay in Virginia to benefit local children. Over 200 children across the state are waiting for their one true wish and new children are referred for a wish every day. With only 12 staff members, we would be unable to fulfill our mission without many dedicated volunteers. Currently, there are over 375 trained Make-A-Wish volunteers across Virginia who donate their time and talents, many of whom work directly with wish children and their families.
