Mission Statement

Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association's is to inspire enthusiasm for the live performance experience of both traditional classical and new music to people of all ages. WMPA Values: - Excellence in all we do. - Championing contemporary and new works, particularly by American composers. - Promoting inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in all of our activities and initiatives, - Honesty, fairness, and accountability. - Actively engaging with the community.

About This Cause

Founded in 1971, WMPA is the only organization that provides a range of programs in both traditional and contemporary classical music for youth, musicians and the community. The Association places consistent emphasis on the performance of new and exciting musical compositions and the support of local and emerging artists, while making high quality musical performance accessible to all members of the community. As a firm proponent of diversity and inclusion, its identity has been shaped by a strong focus on presenting American music, championing works by living composers, and presenting works by underrepresented composers. Our motto is “living, breathing music” and as such we strive to engage as much of the youth, musicians and the community as we can through a variety of venues, opportunities, and musical styles to meet all tastes. No other program matches our scope of services or breadth of music, and we have provided these services in the Washington area for 45 years. WMPA is comprised of five programs: • The Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic (WMP) is the flagship orchestra of the WMPA. It is a semi-professional 60-70 member auditioned orchestra that has been playing in the Washington area in one form or another for over 40 years. As a semi-professional orchestra, all of the orchestra’s principal musicians receive compensation for rehearsals and performances. The WMP performs 5 concerts per season, each concert performed in two different Metro-DC venues (10 total concerts). • Two Youth Orchestras: o The 45-55 member Washington Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (WMYO - grades 9-12), which performs 5 concerts per season o The 45-55 member Washington Metropolitan Concert Orchestra (WMCO - grades 6-8), which performs 3-4 concerts per season. • Free (donations accepted) Summer Chamber Music Concerts (typically 14-16 concerts per summer, from mid-June to mid-September). • The Ulysses S. James Annual Composition Competition ($1,000 prize), now in its ninth year, which receives an average of 10-15 entries each year. Our Philharmonic Orchestra performs sophisticated music at a professional level, but at ticket prices far below other orchestral performing groups in the area ($20 for adults, 18 and under free, free ‘guest’ tickets for subscribers). Our two youth orchestras are dedicated to providing musical education to any student, regardless of economic ability, and as such we offer need-based scholarships for families. Our Lyceum Summer Chamber Music Series engages the community by providing free music for the Metro DC community, offering an opportunity for many to discover a love of music they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience While we compete with a number of other classical organizations, both community-based and internationally-renowned, WMPA is unique in our dual focuses on music education and diverse and innovative programming. We acknowledge and perform the great masterpieces of the past, but we deliberately do not want to be a “museum” of earlier music. Our annual composer competition, now in its ninth year, attracts skilled living composers from all over the eastern United States, and our audiences expect to hear something different from the Philharmonic and from our other programs than they can hear elsewhere.
