Mission Statement

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads’ mission is to build affordable homes that strengthen families and communities in South Hampton Roads. Recently, Habitat SHR added a secondary mission to assist low-income and disabled homeowners with much need home repairs to make their homes warm, safe and dry. We serve all seven geographical entities that comprise South Hampton Roads: Chesapeake, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

About This Cause

Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International is a true world leader in addressing today’s issue of poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads is one of more than 1,500 affiliates in the United States. Since its founding in 1988, Habitat SHR has built or renovated more than 230 homes to qualified, hardworking, low-income families in the South Hampton Roads community. This affiliate completed its first house in 1990 in Portsmouth’s Prentis Park neighborhood. Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads believes in offering a “hand up” not a “hand out” to families unable to obtain conventional home financing. We provide zero percent net interest mortgages on new and renovated homes to families with incomes that generally range between 50-80% of the area median income. Habitat homebuyers only pay the cost of the land and construction - usually about 75% of market appraisal.
