Mission Statement

FairVote is a nonpartisan champion of electoral reforms that give voters greater choice, a stronger voice, and a representative democracy that works for all Americans. FairVote has a proven record since 1992 as a nonpartisan trailblazer that advances and wins electoral reforms at the local, state, and national level through strategic research, communications and collaboration. Today we are the driving force behind advancing ranked choice voting and fair representation in multi-winner legislative districts that will open up our elections to better choices, fairer representation and more civil campaigns.

About This Cause

A non-profit, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization, FairVote educates and enlivens discourse on how best to remove the structural barriers to a democracy that respects every voice and every vote in every election. With our unique networks, analysis, strategic insight and body of research, FairVote acts as a catalyst for electoral reform and voting rights through regular engagement with scholars, journalists, civic leaders, policymakers, and state and local reformers. Examples of FairVote's pivotal role in introducing and drawing attention to innovative reforms include the attention now given to ranked choice voting, the Fair Representation Act, the National Popular Vote plan for president, voter preregistration for young people, universal voter registration, and a constitutional right to vote. We played important roles in the historic wins for ranked choice voting in Maine, a growing number of cities (including our nation's largest city in New York and the largest city in six additional states as of 2023) and presidential primary uses in 2020 and the growth of support for the Fair Representation Act from the likes of David Brooks and the New York Times editorial page. FairVote sees these proposals as essential building blocks for the higher voter turnout, fairer representation and wider spectrum of ballot choices necessary to achieve a just society and responsive governance - one in which most Americans can elect representatives and hold them accountable, in which city voters are as important as suburban voters, in which people of color and women are as likely to win representation as white men and in which campaigns provide opportunities for substantive debate about a full range of policy ideas. We regularly help localities and organizations implement our reform proposals. FairVote's staff, board members and volunteers regularly trigger discussion about reform with its reports and writing. FairVote leaders in recent years have been published, quoted, and/or featured in the Washington Post, Associated Press, New York Times, Salon and The Nation and published several lengthy articles in academic articles and books. FairVote representatives appeared on C-SPAN, MSNBC, Comedy Central and NPR, while policymakers introduced legislation grounded in its outreach and analysis at all levels of government. Going forward, we are deepening our relationships in Congress in order to win more changes federally that both directly and indirectly advance our reform goals. We also are improving our tools and building our capacity to support policymakers and groups seeking changes in states and cities. Operating for many years as the Center for Voting and Democracy, FairVote was founded in 1992. Its services a network of volunteers and allied groups across the nation, including in states like California, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Utah, Georgia, Oregon, and Washington. We rely on donations from individuals and foundations, with all such donations being fully tax-deductible. Below are examples of impact FairVote seeks to have in 2023-2024, with FairVote Action (a 501-c-4- organization having additional goals directly tied to winning change: ● National o Engage in education relating to the value of using ranked choice voting in congressional caucus elections and internal elections like Speaker of the House to avoid impasses o Build awareness and understanding of ranked choice voting and the potential of the Fair Representation Act to expand voting rights and encourage better governance o Connnect our specific reform goals to the broader national conversation about and set of work going to achieve a healthy, sustainable democracy o Work in at least 7 states where ranked choice voting is likely to be used in presidential primaries o Release and draw attention to polls showing how RCV might work in presidential primaries. ● States and cities: o Work with other groups to provide effective research and communications support to state groups o Work with other groups to support effective implementation of RCV wherever it is used, including in 20+ cities in 2023 o Work in 5+ communities to support indepth conversations about opportunities to enact RCV in response to a federal or state voting rights case. ● Movement Support: o Expand our Legal Roundtable on ranked choice voting to 8+ groups to ensure effective resolution of legal issues efficiently and well. o Continue to be the most cited media and online resource on ranked choice voting o Help 20+ state RCV groups increase capacity in alignment with RCV ecosystem goals.. o Have our senior fellows David Daley and Terrance Carroll and other staff leaders regularly write and be part of national conversations and forums on gerrymandering, the Voting Rights Act and the health of our democracy
