Mission Statement

Our mission at the First Baptist Church Centralia is “ To serve humanity by providing a global witness offering the plan of salvation to those in need through preaching, teaching, praying, and caring fellowship. We encourage strong stewardship in order to provide holistic ministry that is Christ-centered and ethnically conscious, thus bringing hope, peace, joy, and love to the world.”

About This Cause

Located in Chesterfield, Virginia, First Baptist Church Centralia has always maintained a strong relationship with the community. The late Dr. Wilson E. Shannon, former Pastor, was well-known for fostering collaboration and partnership with community leaders and citizens. Under his leadership, the “Keepin it Movin'” program was established in 2009. The vision of this initiative was to support and assist in creating better health choices for our children and reducing the childhood obesity crisis in our communities. The "Keepin' it Movin'" program, part of our health and wellness initiative, began to combat childhood obesity but now addresses adult health challenges. The First Baptist Church Health and Wellness Ministry introduced nutritional guidelines and mental health programs and activities, benefiting church members and community neighbors. This health initiative has proven to be a necessity for our community neighbors. The “ Keepin it Movin'” program offers classes three times weekly at First Baptist Church. This initiative exemplifies our values and commitment to serving not only our congregation but also individuals in our communities and around the world. Our Community Partners The Health and Wellness Program at the First Baptist Church Centralia has achieved significant success, which would not have been possible without the cooperation of our community partners. Here are a few of the community partners that have contributed to the success of our Ministry; Sisters Network of Central Virginia ( SNCVA), Chesterfield Health Department, American Heart Association, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Pi Pho Omega Chapter, American Cancer Society, Preschool Academy at First Baptist Church Centralia, Virginia Commonwealth University Virginia ( VCU), Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), and Virginia State. These partners have collaborated with our Ministry, whether providing educational information, speaking in person, or on-site attendance for health fairs and events. Their constant support has always been available for our Ministry. What We Do The First Baptist Church Centralia Health and Wellness Ministry offers family-friendly physical exercise and mental health classes three times a week, led by certified instructors. The Ministry includes health professionals and wellness enthusiasts, aiming to promote healthy lifestyles through engaging educational programs and activities. Our Ministry provides from two to three screenings a year for high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol. Participants are encouraged to consult with their physician based on the results of these screenings. To ensure optimal health outcomes, we follow up with participants to confirm they have consulted their medical provider. Additionally, our Ministry actively participates in national health initiatives, including Healthy Heart Month, Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention, and various other programs throughout the year. Class participant: "The Keep it moving class provides me with an opportunity to stay active and engaged with my community. The group has been together a long time and they are very supportive of each other’s goals. I have been a participant for over 10 years. The class encompasses all ages as well as all levels of movement." Our outcomes • We average approximately one hundred participants in our wellness programs and activities quarterly. • We offer approximately two to three screenings a year. • Approximately one hundred participants attend our health fairs. • We promote National Health Initiatives monthly and quarterly as deemed necessary. Goal We aim to improve our health and wellness ministry by implementing youth depression programs with local schools. With rising hospitalizations, we seek to raise awareness and provide educational resources to families. Additional resources are needed to continue these efforts. Class participant: "I have benefited significantly from this workout program. I get great physical reports, my lab reports are good and my doctors are so happy that I continue to workout with my group." The ministry has had past and current successes and aims to keep improving families' lives. Our mission at First Baptist Church-Centralia Health and Wellness Ministry is to promote holistic health, offering church members and the community ways to improve physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual wellness.
