Mission Statement
The Alzheimer’s Research and Resource Foundation was incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization in the District of Columbia in 1995. It was started by family caregivers and academic Alzheimer’s researchers who came together around a common need of getting support and help for those with Alzheimer’s and/or other related dementias. Today The Alzheimer’s Research and Resource Foundation serves individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease (and related dementias), their families, health care professionals and administrators, and the general public throughout the World.
About This Cause
What We Do The Alzheimer’s Research and Resource Foundation is dedicated to providing Alzheimer’s caregivers the knowledge and tools to help patients and families cope with the ongoing struggles and daily care issues of those suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. The Foundation uses $0.97 of every $1.00 raised to provide the most effective and innovative care research, programs and services. Who We Help: People With Alzheimer’s & Their Caregivers Persons with Alzheimer’s & their Caregivers, specifically, financially challenged families and individuals as well as qualified not for profits in the U.S. and throughout the world. People with Alzheimer’s often need 24/7 supervision and support. This responsibility usually is that of family members. These generous people are known as caregivers. There are over 16 million caregivers in America today, 75% of whom are women. Due to the constant help they provide, the majority of caregivers stop working full time and on average lose over $10,000 in annual income. This financial burden only adds to the day-to-day stress of caring for loved ones with this debilitating disease. So caregivers, in addition to those with Alzheimer’s, need your help. Experts recognize that Alzheimer’s disease is a medical tidal wave sweeping across the globe. In spite of significant investment in R&D by governments and corporations no cure is on the horizon. At the same time, thousands are diagnosed daily with the disease. Your donations benefit caregivers by giving them the knowledge and tools to assist them in giving the best possible care and support for years to come. The Alzheimer’s Research and Resource Foundation is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, donor-supported organization. The Mission of The Alzheimer’s Research and Resource Foundation (ARRF) is to disseminate the “Alzheimer’s Caregiver®” that provides significantly improved hands-on care for the financially challenged patient communities afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease. The mission of The Alzheimer’s Research and Resource Foundation is to provide Free Of Charge to financially challenged families and qualified not for profit organizations copies of The Alzheimer’s Caregiver® Encyclopedia that can be used by caregivers to improve the quality of life of Alzheimer’s patients, their families and caregivers. Additionally, sponsor and distribute Alzheimer’s disease care research that relates to Alzheimer’s patients who are still with us and, in particular, to their families who are in desperate need of help as to the family’s ongoing struggles with the daily care issues of their loved ones suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. The Impact of The Alzheimer’s Caregiver® is worldwide. Alzheimer’s and other dementias are imposing huge societal economic burdens, primarily through the costs of unpaid caregiving by families and friends and the costs of medical and community care. Families and caregivers understand firsthand the devastation caused by the disease. Statistics show that family members and friends provide 85 percent of all home care. On an even more difficult level, statistics estimate 20 to 40 percent of caregivers are raising children while simultaneously caring for older adults. About 75% of the almost 15.5 million Americans and 133.2 million people worldwide caring for a person with Alzheimer’s are women. For most women, assuming the caregiver role leads to a significant reduction in work hours and annual earnings, as well as a loss of benefits including health insurance. The long-term financial effects on women caring for spouses or elderly parents shows a general correlation between a woman assuming a caregiving role earlier in life and suffering economic hardships later in life. Without attention and help for the caregiver, the spiral of economic hardship and health decline may be rapid, leading to a high risk of poverty for women caregivers. Your donation provides our educational program, The Alzheimer’s Caregiver® Encyclopedia, to financially challenged families and individuals as well as qualified not for profits in the U.S. and throughout the world. The history of The Alzheimer’s Caregiver® Encyclopedia is largely the history of Thomas Elin, President and CEO of LightBridge Healthcare Research, Inc., authors of The Alzheimer’s Caregiver® and his unwavering commitment to serving both individuals with Alzheimer’s disease caregiving. From Personal Story… In 1986, Thomas Elin’s father passed away and his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She eventually was placed in a nursing home. During one of her lucid moments, she mused with her son about a care facility like her home with kind staff, well-appointed rooms, and welcoming arms. Thomas made his mother’s request his life’s mission. In 1986, he embarked on the creation of Villa Serena, assisted living facilities dedicated solely to Alzheimer’s care, in affiliation with various universities around the country. To Professional Caregiving… The Villa Serena concept evolved into one of the finest Alzheimer’s care programs in the country. Mr. Elin has had to deal with the constant merging of academic research with hands on Alzheimer’s care in practical terms rather than theoretical long term studies. Having understood the need to create a bridge between specialized patient care and scientific research and education, the Villa Serena facilities were designed to also house a university research center in the form of a dementia clinic. In addition to teaching theories to professional caregivers and Alzheimer’s families in classrooms, Elin and his colleagues spent years gaining day-to-day hands-on care experience, dealing with issues faced by real people with Alzheimer’s disease. Elin, along with Catherine Harris, now ARRF’s Senior Consultant, worked tirelessly on the frontlines tending to the behavioral, emotional, financial, physical, and mental well being of Alzheimer’s and dementia sufferers and their families. They had a hand in every aspect of running a care center from training professional caregivers and handling Alzheimer’s behavioral problems to consoling devastated families and dealing with severe staffing shortages. Connecting Both Worlds… In 2000, the team decided to turn from the small population of Villa Serena residents and transform their years of experience into a multi-media home caregiver training program, thereby opening it up to the broader worldwide audience of caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Caregiver® was developed with the goal of empowering in-home caregivers with the skills and knowledge required to better serve their loved ones’ needs. Numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Aging were received to help fund the research which led to the development of The Alzheimer’s Caregiver®. Mr. Elin and his management team continue to cultivate relationships with universities to both promote and obtain cutting-edge research being conducted in the area of dementia and Alzheimer’s care. The Alzheimer’s Research and Resource Foundation (ARRF) takes great pride in the distribution of The Alzheimer’s Caregiver® Encyclopedia to those who need it the most as it is truly a modern legacy to the memory of Tom Elin’s mother.
