Mission Statement
4Paws is an all volunteer charity that rescues homeless cats and kittens from imminent death in animal shelters and the streets. 4Paws is a foster-based rescue. Cats waiting for adoption stay in private homes after receiving vet care for wellness and illness. 4Paws also promotes spaying and neutering as this is the only viable means to end pet overpopulation and suffering. 4Paws supports Trap Neuter Return of feral cats to help break the cycle of kittens born to outside. 4Paws rescues 300 - 400 cats and kittens each year and finds them loving homes. Administrative costs are low because there are no salaries or rent to pay. Ninety-five (95%) of every dollar donated is used to save feline lives.
About This Cause
An all-volunteer pubic charity, 4Paws takes cats and kittens out of rural and overpopulated shelters that are at high-risk of being euthanized. Approximately 300 to 400 cats and kittens are saved by 4Paws every year. The organization began operations in October 1995 and since that time has saved more than 10,000 cats and kittens from imminent death. Rescued cats are seen by a vet and then placed into foster homes which are private residences where the cats stay until they are ready (physically and emotionally) to be adopted into permanent homes. 4Paws works with a network of veterinary hospitals in the Metro DC area to provide medical care to our rescued cats. Frequently, when cats are rescued from animal shelters, they are sick with diarrhea, upper respiratory disease or injury sustained before entering the shelter. 4Paws works with pet stores to showcase our cats for adoption. Cats stay at the participating stores and volunteers go to the stores twice a day to take care of the cats. The public is able to meet and interact with the cats housed in pet stores in an attempt to find the cats adoptive homes. After Covid restrictions are lifted, 4Paws will start holding adoption fairs at various locations at least twice a month. Each of these fairs highlight 30 - 60 cats and kittens. Foster parents often stay at the fairs to talk to prospective adopters in an effort to help them choose the most appropriate pet for their household. Volunteers also take the opportunity to educate people attending the adoption fairs about general cat care, behavior issues, diet, spaying and neutering as well as many other issues important to creating a healthy living environment for pet and owner. We currently have 180 volunteers working to rescue cats from shelters and the streets and then find them loving homes. 4Paws also partners with Meow's Corner Cafe in Sterling, VA. Patrons visit the cafe and are able to interact with approximately 20 4Paws cats. The cats stay at the cafe until they find adoptive homes so patrons are able to meet the cats in the comfort of their "home" environment.
