Mission Statement

The Friends of Barnabas Foundation was incorporated in 2000 and our mission is to empower families in Honduras through healthcare and education.

About This Cause

Friends of Barnabas’ programs come directly out of our mission to help vulnerable children in Honduras. Improving a child’s life must begin with good health. Improving a child’s life for the long term must include strengthening that child’s community, so that it may better support her. FOB programs address many components of the Honduran health care system, from community based initiatives to system wide endeavors. All of Friends of Barnabas programs: • provide health care services to those without access at no cost to the families • teach preventative health education to children, parents, and community members • empower and improve the capacity of local healthcare providers Community Health Development and Mountain Medical Teams Communities in the area where FOB’s work are chosen to participate in the Community Health Development Program based on criteria such as how far they are from a health care facility, lack of safe water or sanitary systems, whether they are served by other aid organizations, and safe access. All communities must demonstrate a commitment to participating in health education and agree to a formal partnership. Communities receive general health care from medical teams twice a year, including general check-ups, vision and dental care, vitamin distribution, fluoride, anti-parasite treatments, and referrals to other FOB services. In exchange for medical treatment received, communities participate in health related training and educational workshops on nutrition, reproductive health, hygiene, and malaria prevention. A health committee is established in each village to promote the program, and a health volunteer is identified, trained, and equipped to act in this role. We have a Mountain Medical team that travels to Honduras each month. They are comprised of medical professionals, translators and non-medical members. Five of our community health partner villages are visited during the mission week. Teams are housed at Alfredo’s House at our Barnabas House complex. Extended Care The Extended Care program was developed for children whose medical needs go beyond the care provided by the Community Health clinics. Children in this program receive case management services. Educational workshops are given for parents and caregivers of children with special health needs. Children and families receive home visits, transportation to appointments with specialists and hospitals throughout Honduras, medications, and treatments or surgery if needed. The Barnabas House provides pre-operative and post-operative care for our oral and maxillofacial surgical patients, as well as our cardiac surgery patients. Our oral and maxillofacial surgical patients also receive speech/art therapy during their stay. Surgical Programs The Little Hearts Project is a comprehensive pediatric cardiac program created in partnership with local Honduran health providers. Little Hearts provides patient case management for patients with cardiac defects and diseases, including pre-op and post-operative care, and follow-up care for children from throughout Honduras. The project provides extensive education and training for parents of children with cardiac defects. FOB is teaching, mentoring, and training Honduran medical professionals, has funded the education for the first pediatric cardiovascular surgeon in San Pedro Sula, and is collaboratively working to establish a pediatric cardiac ward in Honduras.
