Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide the support that survivors of sexual and domestic violence need to overcome their crisis and to transform their lives. We envision that every person in our community can take pride in having safe homes and healthy relationships.

About This Cause

In April 2000, Safe Harbor opened its doors as an emergency shelter for Henrico County residents in imminent danger due to domestic violence. Throughout our 23-year history, we have expanded services as a direct response to unmet needs within Henrico County identified by key Henrico County partners including Victim Witness, Police and Commonwealth Attorney. Today we offer: • Therapeutic counseling for children, aged 5 and up, who have witnessed domestic violence involving a parent or guardian, and adults and teens, aged 13 and up, who are the victims of domestic violence, sexual violence/assault/abuse, dating violence or human trafficking. Individual therapeutic counseling and support groups are provided at our community office, emergency shelters, Housing Families First in the East End of Henrico County and the Sacred Heart Center in Manchester. We also offer specialized services including art and music therapy and substance use counseling, as well as weekly support groups at both Henrico County jails for female survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking. • Emergency and transitional shelters for sexual and domestic violence survivors. • Therapeutic shelter program for adult survivors of human trafficking which includes emergency and transitional shelters, therapeutic counseling and case management, substance use counseling, life skills, and art and music therapy. • Intensive case management services to minor victims of sex and labor trafficking across the state. • Court advocacy within the Henrico County General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to assist survivors seeking protective orders or involved with criminal cases. • 24-hour crisis hotline. • Hospital accompaniment at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in which trained advocates meet survivors in the emergency room and offer crisis intervention, support, advocacy, and referral information, and • Community outreach and education. Our services are offered in English and Spanish at no cost to the survivor regardless of race, gender, age, national origin, income, immigration status, gender identity or expression, faith, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, and geographic location. We are open to all. We welcome all. Henrico County is our primary service area for our sexual and domestic violence services, while we work with human trafficking clients throughout the state. During FY23, we served 1,502 adults and 110 children. We have a 20-member Board of Directors which is responsible for adopting governance and financial management policies, as well as securing adequate resources to advance our mission. Our Executive Director provides day-to-day leadership to a staff of 20 full-time and 22 part-time individuals. We cannot do our work alone. We have signed MOU’s and cooperative agreements with other agencies such as the Sacred Heart Center, Henrico County Police, Victim Witness, Commonwealth Attorney, and the Sheriff’s Office. We are a founding member of the Richmond Human Trafficking Collaborative and EmpowerNet.
