About This Cause
The Friends of the Reston Regional Library are a major contributor to our local community and its efforts to support and encourage literacy, culture, education, citizenship, and human services. Our core team of over 100 active volunteers process nearly 40 tons of donated books from the local citizenry each year, sorting, boxing, and deploying them back into 7-8 sales which provide much-needed affordable books for children and adults as well as generating funding for the library and other related programs. Our organization spans the gamut from teenagers to very senior citizens, thus building a community of its own and providing a valuable source of fulfilling, rewarding volunteer work for all who participate, and we outreach to our community at farmers markets, festivals, speaker events (which we host, support, and pay for) as well as in the library itself on a routine basis. We encourage the use of the library, driving up door count at local branches with our book sales and providing justification for additional funding, and we support the librarians themselves with staff augmentation and morale-boosting items and events throughout the year. To further our mission, we have also supported other local nonprofit literacy organizations with substantive grants, including for health literacy programs, and literacy for young readers and English language learners.
