Mission Statement
The Chickahominy Indian Tribe - Eastern Division (CIT-ED) is dedicated to empowering our community through cultural preservation, economic development, and advocacy. We strive to improve the well-being of our citizens, protect our tribal sovereignty, and ensure the rich legacy of our ancestors thrives for generations to come.
About This Cause
The Chickahominy people, meaning "Coarse Ground Corn," are some of the original indigenous stewards of the lands now known as New Kent County and surrounding areas in Virginia. Despite forced relocation and historical injustices, our vibrant community has endured, maintaining our cultural heritage and tribal sovereignty. Our story is one of resilience. From a 1646 treaty that displaced us to our return to our ancestral lands by 1750, the Chickahominy people have demonstrated unwavering strength. Officially recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1983 and federally recognized in 2018, CIT-ED is committed to serving our citizens and preserving our rich history. Your support directly empowers us to: -Preserve our cultural heritage: We teach our youth traditional practices, language, crafts, and dance, ensuring our legacy lives on. -Educate and raise awareness: We provide educational programs and presentations to schools and businesses, fostering understanding and respect for Virginia's Native American history. -Strengthen our community: We offer programs and services that support the mental, emotional, and cultural well-being of our tribal citizens and surrounding communities. -Exercise our tribal sovereignty: We work with federal agencies to ensure our self-governance and economic sustainability. By contributing to CIT-ED, you are investing in the future of our resilient people, helping us protect our ancestral heritage and build a stronger, more vibrant community. Join us in honoring the past and shaping a brighter future for the Chickahominy Indian Tribe - Eastern Division.
