Mission Statement
"Building Hope and Character in Today's Youth"
About This Cause
Group home facility for girls and boys. New River Ranch is more than just a pretty place. It is a place of hope and healing for today's youth. All residents of the ranch are loved and listened to. They are taught sound principles that will help them develop character and hope for the future. They are provided with a home-like environment with husband and wife teams and individuals serving as Teaching Parents. They are provided with a variety of leisure time activities which include such things as horseback riding, fishing, and physical training. All residents attend public school in Fayette County, WV. The administration and staff of the local schools share our initiative in ensuring the success of each child. It is our goal to work with the children in the environment in which they have a problem rather than removing them from the environment, providing services, and then expecting them to succeed when placed back into the public school system. New River Ranch and our local schools have been very successful in working with children who have had a history of academic or social problems in the academic setting. We work closely to see that every resource needed (including Individual Education Plans) is utilized to assist, yet maintain a challenge for each student. Tutoring services are provided for students if needed. The Ranch provides a wide variety of recreational activities for the residents. As a therapeutic group home/behavioral health care facility, the Ranch provides social and casework services. There is an Equine Program at New River Ranch that teaches horsemanship and the care and maintenance of another living creature. The program also incorporates horses into a therapeutic setting, using Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and the collaborative efforts between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working with our residents and horses to address treatment goals. The benefits of Equine Activities are immense. They improves confidence and self-esteem by instilling overall sense of wellbeing, accomplishment and responsibility. They increase positive emotional behavior, social interaction, and life skills. They teach accountability, communications skills, and assertiveness. Psychological testing and evaluations are provided by medical personnel and licensed psychologists. Medical and other needed services are provided through local resources. New River Ranch provides a structured environment characterized by a healthy balance of discipline, recreation, education, outdoor work, spiritual guidance and character development. New River Ranch adheres to all state and federal regulations governing child care facilities. Children are placed by the Department of Health and Human Resources, the courts, and Juvenile Probation officers. Should there be a need for an out of state placement, an Interstate Compact Agreement must be approved by both state offices. This ensures the legality of transporting children across state lines. New River Ranch is funded in part under an agreement with the Office of Social Services, Bureau for Children and Families, and West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. Boys and girls between the ages of 10 to 17 at the time of admittance who are abused, neglected, homeless, or otherwise need Level 1 care are considered for placement. Applications may be obtained by contacting the facility. A level system is utilized to ensure that all privileges and consequences are distributed adequately. Level 1 is the lowest level and level 5 is the highest, with new residents beginning the program on level 3. Each resident holds the responsibility as to how quickly each level can be attained. Although the minimum stay at New River Ranch is 20 weeks, the maximum stay at the ranch is compromised upon the needs of each child. Although many placements can be called group homes, New River Ranch is one of the very few worldwide that can truly be considered home to a resident should that individual not have a family or home to which he or she may return.
