Mission Statement
LakewoodAlive is a community-centered nonprofit that fosters and sustains vibrant and welcoming neighborhoods.
About This Cause
LakewoodAlive, in existence since 2004, oversees several programs that enhance our neighborhoods through commercial revitalization and residential improvement projects with the latter program focusing primarily on assisting low-moderate income residents. Led by a team of volunteers and a small staff, LakewoodAlive administers the Main Street Program to strengthen Downtown Lakewood and supports commercial economic development efforts throughout the community. • Hosting Special Events: 15 LakewoodAlive events bring over 40,000 people into Downtown Lakewood each year. • Downtown Lakewood Business Alliance: A 25-member merchant association meets regularly and plans events, promotions, and advocacy campaigns. • Design Committee: A committee of architects, developers, designers, landscapers, etc., works to improve the aesthetic appeal of the Downtown District while ensuring urban and pedestrian standards are incorporated into site plans, renovations, and sign packages. The organization administers a Housing Outreach Program which helps low-to moderate income residents improve the exterior condition of their homes, strengthening the core of Lakewood economy. Lakewood’s housing stock is just as much an economic force as business and industry. Lakewood has over 17,000 units of housing and of those, 12,000 are one and two family homes that are on average between eighty and one hundred years old. It is essential that we work with residents to maintain and sustain their historic housing stock so that we are able to preserve healthy and safe homes. We do this through our Housing Outreach Program which provides assistance through many avenues. • PaintLakewood Program which is able to assist applicants through reimbursement of a portion of material and labor costs for families who are of 80% of area median income or less. • Revolving Paint Fund assists families who participate in the PaintLakewood Program who are 50% or less of area median income with the cost of exterior paint up to $500 per household. • 80/20 Match Materials Fund is a program for families who are 50% or less of area median income and have a do-self or a volunteer project that addresses major health, safety or exterior code violation issues. Homeowners are required to provide 20% of the material cost and LakewoodAlive will provide the remaining 80%. • Knowing Your Home is a free educational workshop series focused on best sustainability and home maintenance practices empowering residents to tackle necessary repairs and improvements. • Contractor Evaluations to research an online database before seeking estimates. • One-on-One Assistance, reviewing estimates, discussing how to contract a repair as well as discussing home repairs to empower the homeowner in tackling home repair choices. Lastly, LakewoodAlive hosts community forums because an engaged citizenry is our biggest asset. Forum topics include Lakewood’s comprehensive approach to sustaining out historic housing stock, the value of buying local, impact and results from the 2010 census, etc.
