Mission Statement

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices during their lifetime and to achieve their potential as responsible citizens by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

About This Cause

The development of educated enlightened and responsible citizens must start with the youth in our country. No other organization is better prepared to do this than the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1925 the Scouting program in Western North Carolina has provided the framework within which youth are educated to develop lifetime values and the qualities of leadership, citizenship, self-reliance, and fitness. While responding to changing societal interests and the needs of its membership, Scouting has retained its original appeal and values. Program objectives are carried out through various age groups, each with specific goals and purposes. Cub Scouting: Cub Scouting, including Tiger Cubs and In-School Scouting, is a family-oriented program specifically tailored for boys 6 to 10, which emphasizes involvement between boys, their parents, adult leaders and friends. Boy Scouting: Scouting endeavors to educate 11 to 18 year-old young men to become physical, mentally, and emotionally fit, have a high degree of self-reliance, have personal values based on religious concepts, have the desire and skills to help others, understand the principles of our American social, economic, and governmental systems, and understand our nation’s role in the world. Venturing: Through the coed program of Venturing, Scouting reaches the 14 to 20 year-old young adult who desires high adventure activities and further study of specialized outdoor programs. Its roots are based on traditional Scouting with activities structured for the young adult. Exploring: Learning for Life is the contemporary phase of the Scouting program, specially designed for 14 to 20 year-old young men and women. It offers young adults a variety of activities with emphasis on career awareness through job shadowing and training opportunities.
