Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Tuscarora Council to prepare young people to make moral and ethical choices over their lifetimes based on the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America is to build character, develop citizenship and foster personal and mental fitness in young people.
About This Cause
The Tuscarora Council was officially organized in July, 1923. The Goldsboro Rotary Club along with citizens from Smithfield and Kinston were responsible for the organization. The council currently covers four counties, Duplin, Johnston, Sampson, and Wayne. The council is governed by an Executive Board, who are interested business and civic leaders from across the council territory. This board is elected each year at the Annual Business Meeting. The officers of the board make up the Executive Committee of the council. The Executive Board meets five times a year and the Executive Committee meets on the alternate months that the board does not meet. The Council traditionally services over 6,500 young people annually through our Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing, Exploring, and Learning for Life programs. The Council is separated into three districts which assist in delivering the Scouting program to the local Scouting units. These districts are Coharie, Duplin and Sampson Counties; Neusiok, Johnston County; and Torhunta, Wayne County. The council owns and operates a 1,100 acre camp facility in the Four Oaks community of Johnston County. The camp is open year round for weekend activities for local Scouting units. The camp operates 5 weeks during the summer as a resident camp. The Council is funded through annual fund campaigns, Friends of Scouting; annual special events; annual product sales campaigns; district and council activities; and through United Way support. The Council is a members agency of the United Way of the Greater Triangle, The United Way of Sampson County, and the United Way of Wayne County.
