About This Cause
Getting to Know United Way of Wayne County The money that is raised from the annual community campaign remains in Wayne County helping local people, only 1.35% is used for membership in United Way Worldwide and United Way of North Carolina. Also 82% of expenses to be put to work in our local community through the grant funding of local programs and UWWC supportive services; high UWWC standards for program effectiveness and accountability; and a review process that invests your gift along with thousands of others in local programs that improve the lives of 1 in 5 local people. United Way of Wayne County is a hand up not a handout - our focus is on strengthening the rungs on the ladder of opportunity for people who are struggling to meet basic human needs; providing early learning opportunities to help close the school readiness gap for disadvantaged children and lead to greater literacy, decreased need for special education services and increased high school graduation rates; teaching people to read so that they have a better opportunity for job advancement and self-esteem; strengthening an individual’s financial stability. Fundraising is about garnering financial resources to relieve suffering, help people, and give them opportunity, hope, and safety; but in a compelling way that connects the investor (donor) with a happy outcome and that their money is going to an important and urgent purpose of improving lives. It’s not about the money – it’s about making a difference in people’s lives. United Way of Wayne County is governed by a 14 member local volunteer Board of Directors which is responsible for all policy and has total governance over the activities of the organization. Annual review of all grants that are provided to local non-profits’ programs is done by local volunteers who evaluate the effectiveness of the programs based upon review of their outcomes.
