Mission Statement

MHA's mission is to provide help, offer hope and promote mental wellness through advocacy, education and prevention in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties, North Carolina. MHA's vision is to be the community’s leading voice to promote mental health, eliminate stigma, and to advocate for effective mental health services.

About This Cause

The primary goal of Mental Health America of Central Carolinas is to ensure community members have access to quality mental health care in order to achieve optimal mental health. MHA's array of programs work together by advocating for systemic changes addressing gaps in service; preventing mental health crises through evidence-based trainings; educating key publics about mental health resources; teaching self-advocacy skills. MHA measurably impacted thousands of community members last year with the following programs: PARENTVOICE: Through Family Peer Support, MHA provides tools, resources and support to family members of youth experiencing emotional, behavioral and mental health challenges. Certified Family Partners teach families how to navigate the education, mental health, child welfare, and judicial systems to achieve positive outcomes. LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY: MHA educates legislators and policymakers about the needs of individuals who depend upon the public mental health system, and public policies that address those needs. We help individuals become self-advocates and to engage in grassroots advocacy. MHA hosts a legislative breakfast early in the session. INFORMATION & REFERRAL SERVICES: MHA provides mental health navigation, Emotional Toolboxes with curated resources for various audiences, and support including a provider directory and free confidential screening tests to those seeking mental health services. Last year, over 5,000 individuals utilized the online screening tests. COMMUNITY EDUCATION & OUTREACH: MHA provided free trainings more than 1,000 individuals last year, including two evidence-based programs: QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) Suicide Prevention training and the youth, adult, and public safety versions of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). COMPEER: MHA's evidence-based Compeer program matches community volunteers with adults in mental health recovery. Volunteers provide one-to-one supportive friendship to offset loneliness and social isolation that can accompany mental illness. ACCESS to CARE: MHA is working with local clinicians to offer Free Short-Term Counseling in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties for youth and adults who are uninsured or underinsured and whose mental health has been impacted by the pandemic. In early 2023, we opened a free MHA Counseling Center: Where Mental Health Matters, for eligible Mecklenburg County residents - renovations are now underway.
