About This Cause
The Mental Health Association in Forsyth County, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, provides a broad range of non-clinical mental health services such as: 1. Information and Referral Services -- to help persons with mental health needs and/or families connect to mental health and other related services in the community. Accessing services, learning how to "navigate" the mental health system can be cumbersome. Our role is to help make "navigating" the mental health system less cumbersome. 2. Consumer Support Groups -- the agency offers psychoeducational support groups to individuals (adults) with: Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Schizophrenia/Schizoaffective Dissorder and a psychoeducational support group for young adults, ages 18-30, called THRIVE. Our support groups help individuals in their recovery by: sharing common concerns, learning new information, exchanging information, developing appropriate coping skills and developing natural supports. 3. Representative Payee Services - through referrals, this program serves individuals with severe mental illnesses who receive Social Security Disability, Supplemental Security Income or other entitlements (e.g. Railroad Retirement) and cannot manage their own funds. The agency becomes the client's payee and manages their funds to pay their rent, utilities, medications, food and other basic necessities. This program helps to avoid frequent hospitalizations and homelessness. 4. Crisis Intervention Team (CIT): In community partnership with NAMI-NW Piedmont, Cardinal Innovations Healthcare, local law enforcement and many community agencies, our agency is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of four (4) CIT trainings in Forsyth County. CIT is a 5-day, 40 hour training to law enforcement and other first responders designed to help them: better recognize the signs and symptoms of persons experiencing a mental health crisis, to de-escalate individuals experiencing a mental health crisis and to provide help/access to community services for individuals with mental health issues in crisis -- as an alternative to jail. 5. Advocacy and Community Outreach Services including: mental health outreach to the African-American Community, educational outreach focusing on suicide awareness and prevention, educational outreach on bullying, mental health screenings, holiday outreach services at our local psychiatric facilities, support group speaker meetings and educational programs on a variety of topics designed to educate the community, reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and to help people access needed services.
