Our top three goals for our participants are to: 1. provide them with a daily, nutritious hot meal that will improve health and diet 2. provide them with a daily check-up and visit that makes them feel safer in their homes 3. give them the opportunity to continue living independently, with dignity, in their own home

About This Cause

“Our Community. Our Seniors. Our Commitment.” The Meals on Wheels program is tried and true. The meals, interaction, and comfort we provide make an impactful and essential contribution to the health and well-being of our elderly neighbors in need. We enhance the quality of the lives of our participants with a daily, nutritious hot meal that improves health and diet. Volunteers offer a daily check-up and visit that makes them feel safer in their homes. We also promote independent living which can prevent or delay the need to move to assisted living facilities. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. Providing a daily meal through Meals on Wheels is about $7. We measure our success by the feedback we receive from our participants. In annual surveys returned by our participants, they report that their lives are enhanced by receiving a nutritious meal each weekday. A daily check-up by a Meals on Wheels volunteer, along with a daily hot lunch, provides them with the opportunity to live at home independently. The meals contribute to their overall health. Self-reporting surveys indicate the positive impact that the nutritional meals have on the participants. They eat better, feel safer, and live independently longer. In a 2017 participant survey, our recipients reported the following: • 93% reported that Meals on Wheels helps them to feel better due to regular, nutritious meals • 98% reported that they feel more secure at home due to the daily visit • 96% reported in that the Meals on Wheels delivery means that they can continue to live at home Meals on Wheels of Wake County provides a daily meal, Monday through Friday, to 1,300 elderly, homebound seniors in Wake County, NC.
