About This Cause

Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region is a not-for-profit, licensed and certified health care organization. Originally known as Hospice at Charlotte, we were established in 1978 by a group of volunteers who believed this community was in need of a better way to care for those at the end of life. In 1997, Hospice at Charlotte and Hospice of Lincoln County (established in 1987) merged to serve a larger region, including Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln counties. In 1998, the organization created a satellite office in Davidson, now known as Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman, to better serve residents in Cabarrus, Iredell, and northern Mecklenburg counties. In 2005, an additional office was opened in south Charlotte to better serve the residents of southern Mecklenburg and Union counties. In 2008, a 16-bed hospice house, the Levine & Dickson Hospice House – Huntersville was opened. In 2012, a second inpatient facility was opened to serve the south part of our service region, Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. In 2015, we opened Hospice & Palliative Care Palmetto Region to serve Chester, Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina, bringing our total number of locations to seven. A team of physicians, nurses, social workers, aides, chaplains, and volunteers get to know our patients as individuals. They provide a holistic team approach through expert medical care, pain management, emotional and spiritual support, and grief and loss counseling for the patient and their families. We provide care for adults and children in their own homes, in long-term care communities, in hospitals and in our two facilities, Levine & Dickson Hospice House-Huntersville and Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, to all who need our services, regardless of age, diagnosis, faith, ethnic background or financial circumstances. We have contracts to provide hospice care within more than 30 skilled nursing facilities throughout the region; in addition, we provide our services to patients in over 40 assisted living communities. During 2015, Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region provided end-of-life care for nearly 5,000 individuals. We provide compassionate, comprehensive care through the following services: Palliative Medicine Consultants provides care for individuals with advanced illness who are in need of pain and symptom management. Care can be offered in conjunction with curative treatments and admission to the program does not require that the patient has a limited life expectancy. Hospice serves patients facing a terminal illness, with a life expectancy of six months or less, and their families. Compassionate and holistic comfort care is provided to enhance the quality and dignity of life. Kids Path® offers specialized health care and support services to children and their families coping with the serious illness of a child. Care may be focused on cure or comfort, with the goal of helping children achieve balance in their lives. Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region has been providing specialized care to seriously ill children since its early days, a service that very few hospices provide. Community Outreach provides professional and community education through a variety of presentations and trainings on end-of-life care topics, including advance care planning and grief support. Our organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors which holds legal, fiscal, and quality oversight responsibility. We have a network of 500 professionals on staff and 350 trained volunteers, caring for 1,000 patients and their families on any given day. Our volunteers visit patients to provide support and companionship, allow caregivers to have a break, read aloud, run errands, provide rides to patients’ appointments and more.
