About This Cause

The mission of Rowan Helping Ministries is to serve, through cooperative community action, our neighbors in Rowan County who are in crisis, by providing essential life needs and educating and empowering them to break the cycle of crisis. Rowan Helping Ministries is God's love in action. We envision a community which helps provide for the essential physical, emotional and spiritual needs of all its citizens. Our current programs include: Shelter Services: Individual case management as well as alternative support services are provided for temporary shelter guests who have no alternative residence. Jeannie’s Kitchen: A nutritious noon meal is provided to the hungry without qualification 365 days a year. Crisis Assistance Network: Individuals and families in financial crisis are assisted in seeking workable solutions to their problems along with spiritual, emotional and material support. Financial Assistance: This program provides limited funds for assistance through a voucher system to those who qualify. Clothing Center: The clothing center distributes seasonal donated clothing. Food Pantry: The food pantry provides groceries to help those with limited financial resources. Life Coaching: Life coaching is free to individuals and families to assist in learning alternative ways to handle difficult situations and break free from the cycle of poverty. Transitional Housing: A transitional housing program for families and for individuals who are homeless but working. The 24 month program is aimed at moving individuals and families from homelessness to self-sufficiency and permanent housing. Rowan Helping Ministries West: A crisis assistance network satellite program that provides food assistance to families in crisis in western Rowan County. New Tomorrows: A program that uses knowledgeable volunteers to provide shelter guests with practical life skills. This program also stimulates public awareness and improves social acceptance of the homeless population. Journey Forward: Shelter guests who have been out of work for a long period of time are provided the opportunity to build a work history while serving as resident staff and move from the shelter into transitional housing. This experience allows the individual to gain valuable experience in the workforce. Breaking Free: A program available to Life Coaching clients to further stabilize their resistance to financial crisis by providing micro loans for small entrepreneurial efforts and/or the establishment of a savings plan. Because of community support in our last fiscal year, Rowan Helping Ministries assisted: • 8,254 individuals with $886,807 in financial vouchers • 20,048 individuals with 695,939 pounds of groceries • 48,861 people with a hot noon meal • 516 different guests with a safe place to spend the night • 10,942 individuals with clothing • 41 working families and individuals were provided transitional housing and life skills training.
