Mission Statement
StepUp Ministry partners with adults and children in the shared goal of stable lives through jobs and life skills training. We help people train for and locate employment opportunities in spite of the individual or systematic barriers they may be facing. Additionally, once employed, we offer adults and their children comprehensive, yearlong services and curriculum to support the whole family in achieving their long-term goals.
About This Cause
Founded in 1988, StepUp Ministry started by providing transitional housing to working families who were homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless. StepUp's early program model focused solely on financial literacy. Since 2010, StepUp’s comprehensive program model consists of three steps: 1) job training and placement; 2) a life skills program for adults and their children; and 3) an alumni program focused on continued vocational growth. Additionally, our Real World program mirrors these steps for young adults, ages 16-21. These programs are designed to prepare adults and children for productive lives. More than 600 low-income adults, typically those with out-of-date job skills, criminal backgrounds or recovering from addiction, enter our programs annually. More than 500 complete our five-day Job Training and Placement program. StepUp partners with local employers to match clients best suited to the employers' job requirements. Over 244 Triangle Area businesses rely on StepUp as an agency that provides qualified job candidates. After they secure employment, qualified individuals enroll in a comprehensive, yearlong Life Skills training program. Adults meet weekly with their volunteer co-partners and attend interactive workshops. This program serves the entire family. Like their parents, StepUp kids meet with trained mentors, attend weekly classes and learn self-discipline. StepUp utilizes age-appropriate curriculum that equips participants to set goals, budget, and properly manage emotions. Every Life Skills participant – child and adult – has a case manager. With age-appropriate curriculum, along with the support of trained mentors, children and their parents learn to make positive life choices. The final step of the model is to provide continuous learning opportunities through the Alumni program. StepUp graduates may enroll in various entrepreneurial and vocational training programs, apply for scholarships, and learn leadership skills in order to help them continue to attain their goals and improve their lives. StepUp’s programs are designed to foster long-term stability. Across each program, research informed practices and partnerships with local agencies, area employers, and volunteers create unique opportunities for lasting change. The outcomes are well defined and as such, StepUp was recently developed a second program in Greensboro, NC. With that program established, StepUp is already exploring expansion into Durham and eventually throughout North Carolina.
