Mission Statement
Catherine's House is a transitional housing program for homeless women and their children.
About This Cause
Catherine's House provides transitional housing and programs including the following components: Case Management: These private sessions with an assigned case manager ensure that each resident is continuously working toward her individual goals using the resources, referrals and guidance offered. Community Resource Room: Residents can use the on-site resource room to find information about local agencies that provide housing, employment, financial, wellness and other assistance. Computers can be used to complete online job applications and search for available housing rentals in order to meet Program Plan goals. Job Seeking Assistance: Residents learn how to search for employment, create a resume and participate in mock interviews by attending job readiness classes or workshops at Gaston College and receiving assistance from Catherine’s House volunteer professionals. Parenting Support: Valuable parenting information, support and encouragement is provided to mothers with children by a Parent Educator from the NC Extension Office. Supportive Counseling: The Living in Transition Group, facilitated by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, covers important topics such as Grief & Loss, Self-Worth and Personal Responsibility as they relate to women in transition. Individual counseling is offered on site or a referral to outside mental health services can be made. Stress Management Training: The skill of Mindfulness and other methods of stress reduction are learned and practiced in order to create order and balance during this time of transition and beyond. Financial Literacy: In addition to developing a personal budget, tracking her spending and exploring her beliefs about money, a resident will develop her own Resident Savings Account and contribute to it regularly. My Life on a Timeline Gathering: Because telling the stories of our lives and witnessing others’ stories is healing, each resident is offered an opportunity share important events in her life with the community of residents in a structured, safe and supportive environment. Social Activities: Feeling isolated and withdrawn is a common reaction to the experience of homelessness. For this reason, we encourage our residents to engage with other residents in the house community and participate in pleasurable activities in the local community. Catherine’s House, residents are provided a small, private room and share common space such as kitchen, bath and laundry areas. Along with following her Program Plan, each resident is responsible for the care of the home, including completion of cleaning duties.
