Mission Statement

House of Mercy empowers those living with HIV or AIDS in their transformation toward a more independent life.

About This Cause

In 1991, the Sisters of Mercy established House of Mercy with the aim of providing compassionate care to individuals in advanced stages of AIDS. This was in response to the growing HIV/AIDS crisis, which had become an epidemic. Since then, more than 380 individuals have experienced unconditional love, care, and dignity at House of Mercy. Advances in research and treatment have offered any people living with HIV the opportunity to live as long as their peers and reach undetectable status with proper care. However, the South still bears the greatest burden of HIV and deaths compared to other regions. To address the unmet needs of those living with HIV/AIDS, we updated our mission in 2022. Our focus is now on empowering and transforming lives through housing and supportive services while working towards changing an unjust system. House of Mercy assists individuals living with HIV or AIDS who are 18 years of age or older that are unhoused or experiencing housing insecurities. All clients assisted by House of Mercy have incomes at or below 80% of the area median income. The truth is that to end the HIV epidemic, it takes all of s, and we must invest in allowing those living with HIV or AIDS to be decision-makers in their lives. Using a trauma-informed approach and remaining knowledgeable about Housing First and Harm Reduction Principles allows us to meet people where they are in their journey. Our uniquely crafted initiatives: The PALM program is dedicated to mitigating housing insecurities and furnishing all-encompassing support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. This program consistently emphasizes the process of "rebuilding" lives, exemplified through patient advocacy, medication education, nutrition education and more. Furthermore, our Positive Connections program expands on this support by delivering case management services to individuals who are in the process of transitioning out of PALM or are residing autonomously within the community. Ranging from employment assistance, rental/utility assistance and peer support services.
