Mission Statement

The mission of Right Moves for Youth is to provide resources and guidance to help students graduate high school with a plan for their future success. Right Moves for Youth is a local non-profit organization working to reduce the occurrence of student dropouts in Mecklenburg County. Our program serves students in grades 6-12.

About This Cause

Right Moves for Youth is a school-based prevention program that collaborates with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and other community partners to help students in middle and high schools understand the importance of graduating and the impact that having a high school diploma can have on their lives. Right Moves for Youth is committed to improving our community through diligent investment in our local youth. Right Moves for Youth works with the students to help them learn and practice new skills, give and receive peer support, develop positive relationships with adult mentors, and find new meaning in succeeding in school and graduating. HOW IT WORKS •RMFY groups meet weekly for a minimum of 1 hour •Our core service delivery is group facilitation based on a group therapy model •RMFY groups serve at least 20 students, with a max of 30 members per group •Each group is supported by the following: an educator; a law enforcement officer; a community volunteer and a RMFY staff member •Group leaders follow a standardized curriculum that has been established with a focus on life skills and is age appropriate •During group times, students participate in interpersonal and intrapersonal activities through structured life skills lessons, group discussion, career exploration, service learning and/or community engagement through our curriculum HOW STUDENTS ARE SELECTED Students must be referred to the program and are typically identified by Charlotte Mecklenburg School principals, guidance counselors and teachers. There is the opportunity for students to self-refer. Students recommended should meet as many of the following criteria as possible: •Students needing motivation to improve attendance/timeliness •Students needing a push to improve their academic standing •Students needing direction in making appropriate social and behavioral decisions necessary to reduce office referrals/suspensions •Students who may benefit from an increase of positive self-esteem/self-image •Students who may need help in improving and maintaining a positive attitude •Students whose home environments interfere with their educational success RMFY’s program works for ALL students, not just those experiencing challenges. There is no charge to the students who participate in our program. WHY IT MATTERS Our children matter. RMFY life skills based curriculum helps engage our students in topics such as: personal development, health and wellness, education (college and career exploration), decision making/organization, conflict resolution, relationships and finances. This allows our students the opportunity to gain skills to face real life challenges. The program is both rigorous and rewarding. Building character, self-esteem, communication skills, awareness of self and others helps these students learn to turn obstacles into opportunities. We seek to encourage, educate, engage and empower our students to shape their own future. Right Moves for Youth has a focus on prevention. Without these measures of intervention dropout rates will continue to increase, particularly in our minority youth. The effects of student dropouts have far reaching implications on crime rates along with our local economy. Consider the following consequences of our inaction to help our at risk youth: •Earning potential: dropouts are more likely to be unemployed •Public assistance: dropouts comprise nearly half of the heads of households on welfare •Single Parents: dropouts are more likely to have children at younger ages and more likely to be single parents than high school graduates •Prisons: More than 80% of America’s prisoners are high school dropouts At RMFY we take pride in offering our students an environment that is safe, and encouraging. We work to ensure our students have the tools they need to be successful and the support they need to encourage independence, helping them find strength to make a difference in their own lives. We empower them to not become a statistic, to not be the norm, but to be the exception.
