Mission Statement

Urban Ministry Center is dedicated to bringing the community together to end homelessness in Charlotte, one life at a time.

About This Cause

Homelessness is very complex, but it is solvable. Urban Ministry Center is committed to ending homelessness and we do that by including the community in a continuum of services for our neighbors yet to be housed, from street to housing. Each day, our Neighbor Services team provides for the basic needs of 400+ individuals experiencing homelessness by providing showers, laundry facilities, a place to receive mail, phones, and a hot lunch in our soup kitchen. All of these services are provided with volunteer help, and volunteers also provide resources to help individuals attain ID, fill prescriptions, secure transportation to new employment or medical appointments, and provide referrals for food, furniture, or housing. While our main campus is primarily a day-shelter with services, we also organize emergency seasonal shelter through our Room In The Inn program. We have 150 houses of faith, colleges, and YMCA’s that provide an overnight shelter for our neighbors during the coldest months of the year, December 1 – March 31. The SABER program provides treatment paired with housing to help homeless men with substance use disorders. Our outcomes are amazing with 84% completing the first 90 days of the program. Urban Ministry Center embraced the housing first model early on as a way to end chronic homelessness for some of our most vulnerable individuals. Our program began in 2008 with a small pilot of 13; in 2017 we have housing and supportive services for 120 individuals at Moore Place and another 175 in sites scattered across Charlotte. The cost of crisis services (ER, hospital, detox, jail) for a chronically homeless individual in Charlotte averages around $40,000 and provide no outcomes. We can provide housing and a case manager for that same person for $14,400 and nearly eliminate those crisis costs AND have great outcomes: improved health, reconnection with family, engagement in the community, pursuit of education or more. The Street Outreach & Engagement team works mainly off of the main UMC location, looking for those who are not necessarily seeking out help. They begin to build relationships with those staying in our parks, on the street, abandoned buildings, under bridges. They work with these very vulnerable chronically homeless individuals to get them ready for housing, and then apply for housing. Urban Ministry Center’s goal with this continuum of programs is to increase access to income, good healthcare, and housing for our homeless neighbors. We believe we will achieve our mission of ending homelessness by engaging the community to get there.
