Mission Statement
Family Promise of the Lower Cape Fear supports families experiencing housing instability, including domestic violence survivors, to achieve sustainable independence. Established in 1996 with the initial focus on providing emergency shelter, we have responded to the needs of our local community and expanded our programs services to also include long term shelter, eviction prevention, shelter diversion, meals, financial literacy, and Keys to Good Tenancy. Our programs and resources help families we serve to regain their independence and move into permanent housing. We want to make an impact on these families for a lifetime.
About This Cause
Homelessness is a complex, multi-layered problem affecting the entire family. We believe many factors contribute to the health and wellness of our communities, including housing status as a social determinant of health. The programs we offer to families bring them from a state of homelessness to independence, and in our experience, stable housing is the first step for these families in ensuring the health and wellbeing of themselves and their children. Family Promise does not to put a band-aid on the problem but utilizes a comprehensive, holistic approach to helping families permanently overcome their individual challenges. 1. Stabilize families in the crisis of homelessness by providing their immediate needs of shelter, food, safety, and education for their children. 2. Help families identify factors contributing to their homelessness, such as underemployment, lack of safe, reliable childcare and transportation, poor credit, medical/dental and mental health problems, and legal issues. 3. Assist them in creating a step-by-step plan to address these factors. 4. Improve the economic status of the families through financial literacy workshops, budgeting, debt repayment and increasing their credit score. 5. We mobilize volunteers who can help families achieve their goals. Perhaps most important: We Keep Homeless Families Together.
