Mission Statement
Our mission is to support the development of young children and families in Wilson County through collaborative, community-based programs focusing on health, family support services, and quality education.
About This Cause
Smart Start is a comprehensive public-private initiative to help all North Carolina's children enter school healthy and ready to succeed. Smart Start programs and services provide children under age five access to high-quality and affordable child care, health care, and other critical services. The Wilson County Partnership for Children is a non-profit organization led by local volunteers, designed to provide Smart Start programs and services for families and children in Wilson, North Carolina since July 1995. We envision a partnership in which the Wilson County community joins hands with families so that every child age 0-5 is cared for by loving, competent adults, helped to stay healthy and safe, given opportunities to learn, create, and enjoy life, and enters school prepared to be successful. The Wilson County Partnership for Children is interested in being considered for a charitable donation to match our Shape NC Funding. Shape NC is providing funding for 3.7 years that addresses early childhood obesity utilizing physical education and nutrition for children 2-5 years of ages. Children enrolled in 3, 4 and 5 star centers will be funded by Shape NC and any additional charitable donations from Benevity will be used as a match. According to the percentage of low income children ages 2-4 who were overweight or obese in 2014, North Carolina has an obesity rate of 30% with 61 counties being at or above the state average. In Wilson County, 32% of children ages 2-4 are overweight or obese. The goal is to prevent obesity and/or reduce weight gain levels at 10 local child care centers using BMI every six months to note reductions in children’s weight. The donation will focus on early experiences with food and on-site physical activities during recess that inspire a lifetime of healthy behaviors. The integration of health programs and tools from three major statewide best practices in child care sites and communities include using approved curriculum for preschoolers. They are: 1. Be Active Kids: The signature health program of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation designed to increase physical activity of both children and adults in early care and education settings. 2. Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (Go NAP SACC): Online tools developed by UNC-Chapel Hill researchers for early care and education programs to improve their practices, policies, and environments to meet best practices in four content areas: child nutrition, infant and child physical activity, outdoor play and learning, and screen time. 3. Preventing Obesity by Design: Child care sites receive a POD toolkit that consist of working with Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) to design and support installation of enhanced outdoor learning environment and the local subgrantee provides financial assistance which may be used for outdoor builds. The remaining cost needed for Shape NC is $300,000 for November 1, 2019-November 30, 2020. To date, we have secured $223,000 ($150,00 grant and $73,000 in match). Wilson County Partnership for Children needs additional matching funds in the amount of $77,000. These matching funds will be used for ten centers to purchase outside and inside physical education equipment which includes balls, hoops, ropes, cones, markers, scrimmage equipment, exercise and fitness, sets, kits, team building games, tricycles, preschool gym equipment as well as nutritional books and lesson plan materials. Wilson County Partnership for Children is funding a Lead Technical Assistance Coordinator and an entry level Physical Education/Nutrition Specialist with benefits We have already secured funding for salaries at this time. Your consideration concerning the reduction of early childhood obesity in Wilson County is appreciated.
