Mission Statement

Cancer Services of Davidson County provides emotional, physical, and financial support to cancer patients in Davidson County.

About This Cause

We wish to offer a holistic approach to caring for patients at Cancer Services of Davidson County. Cancer presents not only a physical health crisis, but a financial and emotional crisis as well. The Cancer Patient Support Program (CPSP) seeks to address all these areas through physical, emotional, and financial support components. We will provide a brief overview of each component. The CPSP offers our patients three types of financial support: medical, transportation and emergency. First, the CPSP helps pay for prescription medications related to their cancer. Our patient’s prescriptions can be cost prohibitive and we use funds to ensure patients are following their doctor-advised regimen. Second, we offer transportation reimbursements to defray the cost of traveling to and from treatments and/or the doctor. Finally, we help with basic needs (rent, utilities, etc.) in emergency situations. Supporting our patients in need alleviates a portion of their burden and improves their physical and/or mental health. It also increases the access they have to medicine and treatment. In order to qualify for financial support, a patient must complete our application process and submit proof of household income. To receive financial support, a patient's annual income must fall below 200% above the federal poverty guideline level. For 2019, we offered $750 of financial support to each patient for a 12-month period. Patients may use this allocation as they need with guidance from our staff. There are checks and balances in place to guarantee donated dollars are used efficiently and the system is not manipulated. (For example, any patient who requests emergency assistance more than once must take a budget counseling from fellow United Way of Davidson County partner agency, Lexington Housing Community Development Corporation). The CPSP also offers three types of physical support to patients. First, the CPSP provides day-to-day necessities, home health equipment and supplies, wigs, bras, prostheses, and nutritional supplements. These are items that our patients may need physically to help improve their health, but, due to the expense, have limited access. Second, the CPSP supports physical health by offering exercise classes (free of charge and designed for cancer patients) and yoga (which was newly added in 2020). Certified personal trainer and dedicated volunteer, Kassaundra Lockhart, pours her time and heart into the exercise classes and Kimberly Kestner lead our yoga classes. Sadly, Covid-19 has caused us to temporarily put these on hold. Third, the CPSP partners with the Novant Health: Thomasville Medical Center Foundation to provide one-to-two free cases of nutritional supplement (for a three-to-six month period, free of charge) to patients who fall within a certain income range and are in active cancer treatment. While the CPSP provides supplements, this partnership allows us to provide more physical support than we could do alone. The third and final component of the CPSP is emotional support. We offer group meetings hosted three times a month (two evening and one daytime meeting). We also offer special meetings throughout the year. For instance, once a year we offer a special caregiver series and during the holidays we host a Thanksgiving meal and a Christmas party. We also offer telephone support and are always available to listen to our patients. We also have a licensed counselor who volunteers and has offered free counseling to our patients on a limited basis. By offering this service we are offering support and compassion to our patients. Each of these CPSP components have measurable data and indicators.
