Mission Statement
Neighbor to Neighbor is a community-development organization that focuses on 1-on-1 academic youth mentoring and employment-creating social enterprises to help our neighbors pursue their education, achieve their full potential, and serve others.
About This Cause
At Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N), there are two wings to our plane. First, is academic mentoring for 150 Students who are significantly behind grade level and second, are three employment-based social enterprises where we create living-wage jobs for individuals in our community who face major barriers to employment. Read below for more info on both: N2N's Academic Mentroing program is a specialized program that targets and admits students who are at least two grade levels behind in math or reading because whenever a student falls this far behind, that data shows their chances of graduating high school drop below 25%. With our i-Ready diagnostic, we are able to leverage technology to provide a deep, customized evaluation of each student and therefore create an individually tailored curriculum for each student’s unique needs to get them back on grade level as fast as possible (within 2-4 school semesters). This academic growth rate is 3x the national average for after school programs in the US. We credit this success to our highly relational model where each student gets two Mentors for the year who invest in the child and help us with feedback to make week by week tweaks to maximize efficiency. Neighbor Enterprises is an employment social enterprise ecosystem that employs and mentors people overcoming serious barriers to living-wage employment in Raleigh. We have three businesses: Neighbor Cleaning, Neighbor Lawn Care, and Neighbor moving — a home-services social enterprise ecosystem where Raleigh can leverage its property and purchasing power to create and sustain living-wage work that is otherwise absent in these low-barrier to entry industries. For both individuals who feel unable to help make a difference and for those who otherwise find themselves stuck in working poverty, we are bringing a mutually dignifying relationship where employees are paid a living-wage and cared for like they matter and where customers experience joy from directly supporting those who need it most in our city. We start every employee off at $19/hr no matter their background or experience and work to get them to $20/hr via training and wrap-around services. On average our employees make $10/hr more from their previous place of employment.
