Mission Statement
Peer Health Exchange’s mission is to build healthier communities with young people. Together, we create education opportunities for peers to share the tools and resources young people need to make healthy decisions.
About This Cause
Peer Health Exchange’s (PHE) mission is to build healthier communities with young people. We provide health education programs to high schools in underserved communities across the United States, including in New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. PHE was founded in 2003 by Yale students in response to their local community need for health education in schools. Since PHE’s founding, our health workshops have reached over 200,000 high school students. At the urging of young people, we are now expanding access to health knowledge and resources by reaching youth directly, beyond the classroom. PHE health education workshops focus on building high school students’ skills in support of their mental health, sexual health, and substance misuse prevention. Our model is centered on near-peer health education. We hire and train college- aged fellows to serve as health educators in ninth grade classrooms and with some community- based organizations. Often high school-aged young people are more comfortable discussing sensitive health topics with relatable college-aged fellows than with older teachers or other adults in their lives.
