Mission Statement
The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative, Florida Affiliate, Inc. saves and changes lives while providing at-risk women with the prevention and early detection necessary to beat the odds of cancer and heart disease. We are an outreach organization dedicated to educating underserved women about the importance of breast and heart health while providing them with the resources to beat breast cancer and heat disease. As a platform for civic engagement, social change and collaboration, our mission is conducted through targeted door-to-door outreach, screening referrals, ongoing recommended screening, care coordination, navigation and college campus clubs which promote prevention and wellness to impact future generations.
About This Cause
One in three women dies from heart disease each year. It is the leading cause of death in women taking the lives of more than 400,000 of our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, family members and friends. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors and are completely unaware of the threat that they face. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime. It is the second cancer cause of death in women, killing 40,000 women each year, taking the lives of those we love. Early detection and disease deterrent lifestyles have proven to change and save lives from both of these potentially deadly diseases. The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative, Florida Affiliate, Inc. (WBHI) is non-profit outreach organization that lives its mission to save and lives while providing underserved, uninsured, low income women with the prevention, early detection, and treatment necessary to beat the odds of breast cancer and heart disease. WBHI’s purpose is to reach as many women, family members as possible, where they live, with lifesaving breast and heart health education, engaging hundreds of volunteers to expand community reach, maintaining medical provider relationships in three South Florida counties to bring screening and treatment to at-risk neighborhoods, otherwise unavailable to low income women. The organization utilizes an innovative, evidence-based, best practice, comprehensive and collaborative strategy that combines health prevention and wellness, civic engagement, and social responsibility. Since 2006, WBHI has knocked on the doors of nearly 140,000 households during 95 month-long targeted campaigns in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. The program has been evaluated as an evidence-based, effective model to address the disparities in breast cancer and heart disease in women at-risk.
