About This Cause
Founded in Charleston on March 15, 1945 Catholic Charities of the South Carolina has been serving our state's vulnerable population for over 75 years. We are a unique organization, as we serve the entire state of SC through our ministries. We serve over 50,000 individuals per year through our client choice food pantries, which retain the dignity of our visitors by treating them to a grocery store experience to obtain food. Our Restorative Justice program was recently highlighted and praised by Gov. Henry McMaster in helping SC obtain the lowest recidivism rate in the country. Our niche Save a Smile program fills a huge dental health gap by providing dentures to those with missing or dysfunctional teeth. Clean of Heart Ministries creates a safe space where those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can get a warm shower and access laundry services. Our Lady's Pantry is a part of the Wellness Program at Catholic Charities. Through our wellness pantries we strive to provide healthy foods along with behavioral economics education to help make a systematic change in the lives of our clients throughout South Carolina. Clients are able to choose the amount of food they are allocated according to their family size and are able to choose from items such as fresh produce, frozen meats, eggs, milk, and other canned items. Our Lady’s Pantry also has USDA food products stocked daily when available during operating hours. Catholic Charities of South Carolina is at the forefront of any natural disaster that could impact our beautiful state. Hurricanes and flooding are our most commonly experienced disasters. Our Disaster Services Program started in 2016 just after the devastation of Hurricane Matthew. Since then, we have been able to provide 1,077 individuals with assistance in repairing damage caused by hurricanes and water damage. We provide services for 3 different phases of a natural disaster: Preparedness, Response/Relief, and Recovery. Getting Ahead is a program that provides education for understanding and breaking the cycle of generational poverty from its financial, psychological and social causes to its ramifications. This 16-week course, taught by financial literacy and banking professionals, equips participants to overcome financial challenges and encourages them to work to build a better future for themselves. Getting Ahead seeks to empower those experiencing poverty by supplying participants with skills, tools, and relationships to begin the path toward self-sufficiency. Every day, Catholic Charities' specialty staff in the Midlands shares their gifts by giving back to a community that remains a stigmatized and untouchable population – the incarcerated. We have a Prison Ministry and Re-entry service team to ensure those who have served their time are able to restore their faith in themselves and choose a second chance at life: Prison Ministry: For those who are currently serving inside a prison and wish to be ministered to, bible requests, mass information. We have a full-time chaplain who works with local parishes to coordinate inmate spritual needs. Re-entry: Our impactful pre-release program. We start to refer to inmates as "returning citizens" and help set them up for success into reacclimation into the "real world." We have built strong and productive partnerships with South Carolina Department of Corrections to work inside & outside the walls to make sure returning citizens in our program have their critical documents, secure housing, clothes, and any other unique needs filled prior to release.
